Surprise! Official 2012 GOP Platform Is Anti-Online Poker

Earlier this week, the official 2012 Republican (aka GOP, aka "Grand Old Party") platform was released on GOP.com.

The release of the report coincides with the 2012 Republican National Convention, which is currently taking place in Tampa Bay, Florida. Mitt Romney has officially secured the Republican nomination for President and will accept the nomination later this week.

--

Anyways, what is the Republican party's official stance on "online gambling" in 2012?

From the section "Making the Internet Family-Friendly" in their official 2012 GOP Platform document:

"Millions of Americans suffer from problem or pathological gambling that can destroy families. We support the prohibition of gambling over the Internet and call for reversal of the Justice Department's decision distorting the formerly accepted meaning of the Wire Act that could open the door to Internet betting."

So there you go - the Republican party's official stance on Internet gambling for the 2012 campaign. Certainly not a surprise..

--

According to Gallup.com, President Obama currently has a very small (47% to 46%) lead over Mitt Romney in national polling numbers.

Provider of Online CRM, Web CRM and Small Business CRM Really ...

LONDON, August 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

- Online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM?users will no longer have to use third party emailing systems -

Really Simple Systems - http://www.reallysimplesystems.com/ - one of the world's largest providers of online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM systems, today launched a new extension to its Marketing module that includes all the online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM system mass emailing functionalities that had traditionally only been provided by dedicated emailing systems.

The new online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM system emailing functionality is part of Really Simple Marketing, the Marketing Module available in the Enterprise Edition of Really Simple Systems online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM and will be available free of charge to all existing Enterprise Edition customers.

The new functionality within the online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM system includes features such as:

  • Easy-to-use HTML editor
  • Standard and custom email templates
  • Image hosting
  • Multiple attachments
  • Personalization
  • Email scheduling for a specific date or over a period using DribbleMail?
  • Tracking of opens and click-throughs from multiple links within the email
  • Unsubscribe and bounce handling
  • Spam score reporting; and clickable graphs and reports.

John Paterson, CEO of online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM company, Really Simple Systems, comments, "Our mission is to make CRM Simple and by bundling the mass emailing functionality into the online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM system, we've removed the complexity of trying to link the two applications together."

David Hutter of Real Training, http://www.realtraining.co.uk, a provider of training and testing services to the education industry, was a beta test user of Really Simple Marketing from the online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM company. Hutter comments, "We had been looking at using third party emailing systems like MailChimp, but the task of moving data between the online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM and emailing system was complicated and time-consuming. Integrating the two saves a huge amount of time and it is really useful to see the emailing stats tie directly into the campaigns in the CRM system."

He continues, "Adding contacts to an emailing campaign can be done easily from within the online CRM, web CRM and small business CRM system too and having an easy-to-use HTML editor means that non-technical marketing people can easily set up new mailshots. We also had an issue with data cleansing, and the automatic bounce handling has made a huge improvement to our data quality."

Just Around The Corner ? Mrs. Darsie's Menagerie

Looking at the calendar, I?m still in shock. ?I?m due in roughly two weeks, and I still can?t believe it. ?I mean, don?t get me wrong. ?I am SO ready for the baby to be born. ?I keep saying, ?Get this child out of me! ?We?re both running out of room.? ?But in truth, I also can?t wait to meet Zoe, to hold her and shower her with love.

And love is something that Zoe will never be short of. ?Earlier in the month, my family in the 49th VA threw us a baby shower at the re-enactment for Manassas. ?I wish that I could have shown up in proper attire, but sadly, nothing fits at this point. ?I wonder why? :-)

A yummy cake

?

Zoe?s first re-enactment dress

?

She also received her first re-enactment cup (engraved,) cloth diapers, felted booties (with spinning fiber for Mommy!), another dress to wear when she?s older, adorable modern baby clothes, an antique rattle, and a hand-made baby quilt. ?These ladies are amazing, and I am so lucky to have them in my life. ?Zoe is going to look so cute decked out in all her Victorian-esq finery.

We also had a few games to play, which were a blast. ?There was the ?measure the belly game?, dropping wooden clothes pins into a cup, ?Who Am I?, and another game to which I?ll just call ?Guess That Poo?.

The ?Who Am I? game was a blast, trying to figure out the name on the card that was in your hand (that you can not look at, but only identify with clues from the other players.) ?Remember that scene in the movie ?Inglorious Bastards? where they are in the basement bar? ?Yes, that game. ?Minus the guns.

Georgia (in the middle) guesses right.

?

Linda, the Brave!

?

So, obviously that is not REAL poo. ?It is melted candy bar, and the object of the game was to guess the right candy bar that had been squished on the cloth. ?I thought it was hilarious and I have to save this one for any future baby showers that I may have to help plan.

I have a ton of wonderful photos from that day, courtesy?of Brad (our group photographer.) ?John and I had a blast and we can?t thank everyone enough!

A few weekends ago, we had yet another shower. ?This one is the big one for family and close friends, that my mother had been planning for months. ?It was so very lovely, and we had a blast! ?It was good to see family, and friends that I haven?t seen in a while. And a big thank you to LaMisha, for taking these wonderful photos! ?I have so many more to which I can?t wait to see, but I wanted to share a few of them here.

Tory, Corey, and Me

?

The adorable top of the cake (and totally edible!)

?

We received so many things, that I must confess ? I was a bit overwhelmed. ?I?m glad that I had Tory writing everything down for me. ?Diapers, clothing, baby bath items ?. so much cuteness!!! ?Not to mention the glider/rockers with ottoman and a Moses basket. ?I?m telling you, the only thing that I really need now is the baby! :-)

Putting my feet up

?

I think it is safe to say that, at this point, we are as ready as we?ll ever be. ?I know that I?m ready to have this baby, now I just need to get her on track!

?

My favorite photo, thus far. Me and my Mom.

Las Vegas burlesque star Holly Madison pregnant

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Holly Madison, the blonde burlesque performer who worked at Playboy and on reality TV before starring in a Las Vegas Strip show, says she'll be adding a new title to the resume ? mom.

The 33-year-old star of "Peepshow" told Us Weekly she's 12 weeks into her pregnancy. Her boyfriend of nine months, Pasquale Rotella, issued an enthusiastic statement Wednesday.

"Holly and I are so excited to announce that we are going to be parents," said Rotella, who is CEO of Insomniac Events, organizers of the Electric Daisy Carnival rave. "We're in love and counting down the days until we meet our beautiful baby. I can hardly believe how lucky I am."

In May, Madison announced she would finish her run with "Peepshow" at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on Dec. 30.

Show officials say tickets are still available through the end of the year, but they're working with Madison to determine how much of that time she'll be performing in the lead "Bo Peep" role.

"The producers of 'Peepshow' couldn't be happier for Holly as we know she has had a long desire to become a mother," show officials said in a statement, adding that they'll be making a casting announcement soon.

"Peepshow" debuted in March 2009, with Madison taking the lead in June of that year.

Madison previously worked at Playboy and dated the magazine's creator, Hugh Hefner. She's also known for her role in the reality show "The Girls Next Door."

?Capitalist production is not merely the production of commodities, it is essentially the production of surplus-value. The labourer produces, not for himself, but for capital. It no longer suffices, therefore, that he should simply produce. He must produce surplus-value. That labourer alone is productive, who produces surplus-value for the capitalist, and thus works for the self-expansion of capital. If we may take an example from outside the sphere of production of material objects, a schoolmaster is a productive labourer, when, in addition to belabouring the heads of his scholars, he works like a horse to enrich the school proprietor. That the latter has laid out his capital in a teaching factory, instead of a sausage factory, does not alter the relation. Hence the notion of a productive labourer implies not merely a relation between work and useful effect, between labourer and product of labour, but also a specific, social relation of production, a relation that has sprung up historically and stamps the labourer as the direct means of creating surplus-value. To be a productive labourer is, therefore, not a piece of luck, but a misfortune? (Karl Marx, Capital, Volume I).

Arctic sea ice melting, sets record low (+video)

New data shows Arctic sea ice has fallen to the lowest point ever recorded and it's likely to continue melting through mid-September. As the Arctic warms, so does the rest of the globe, warn activists.?

By Staff,?Reuters / August 28, 2012

A polar bear is seen in the water during an aerial survey in this file photo. Arctic sea ice shrank to its second-lowest level ever, U.S. scientists said on Wednesday, with particular melting in the Chukchi Sea, where polar bears were recently seen swimming.

The world's Arctic ice?cap has shrunk to a new low, surpassing a record set only five years ago, and is expected to keep retreating for a few more weeks, according to U.S. data released on Monday.

The Arctic sea ice?fell to 1.58 million square miles, or 4.10 million square kilometers, down 27,000 square miles from 2007, the lowest since satellites began measuring the ice?in 1979, according to the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center.

"It's a little surprising to see the 2012 Arctic sea ice?extent in August dip below the record low 2007 sea ice?extent in September," said?Walt Meier, a scientist with the data center.

"It's likely we are going to surpass the record decline by a fair amount this year by the time all is said and done."

The ice?is expected to dwindle until mid- to late-September when the summer melting usually ends, according to the center.

Shrinking of the Arctic?ices alarms scientists and environmentalists because the Arctic?acts as the world's air conditioner, helping to moderate the globe's climate.

As parts of the Arctic?melted, this year has been marked by record heat in much of the Northern Hemisphere, especially across the continental?United States?which has been ravaged by drought.

Most scientists blame global warming for the retreat of the Arctic ice?and there is concern that the growing amounts of open water means the Arctic?will not be as effective moderating the planet's climate.

"These preliminary figures provide irrefutable evidence that greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming are damaging one of the planet's critical environments, one that helps maintain the stability of the global climate for every citizen of the world," said?Kumi Naidoo, executive director of?Greenpeace.

Official: 24 South Sudan troops killed by rebels

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? At least 24 South Sudanese soldiers have been killed in clashes with a militia group that the southern government accuses of subverting a disarmament campaign, a southern military official said on Monday.

South Sudan army spokesman Col. Philip Aguer said that an additional 12 soldiers were wounded and 17 are still missing from the Aug. 22 ambush of 200 South Sudanese troops who had been sent to quell alleged rebel activity in Jonglei State, the scene of a disarmament program that Human Rights Watch criticizes as too violent.

The killing of South Sudanese troops has been condemned by the U.N. mission in South Sudan, which said in a statement that the attack was "deliberately intended to undermine progress made in improving the security environment and in forging inter-communal reconciliation in Jonglei State."

Aguer said the rebels are led by an elusive militant named Yau Yau and that they are backed by South Sudan's northern neighbor Sudan in a clandestine effort to keep Jonglei State lawless and ungovernable. Aguer said the rebels are allied with the cattle-keeping Murle tribe, whose men are resisting the government's disarmament efforts. The soldiers were ambushed at a place called Fhodo in Pibor County, he said, describing the rebels simply as a "Khartoum-supported militia." Sudan has consistently denied such allegations.

Relations between the two Sudans have been especially tense since April, when the southern military forcibly took a disputed oil well in an armed conflict that threatened to escalate into full-blown war between the neighbors.

South Sudan became an independent state last year, but it has outstanding border and oil-related issues with Sudan. The neighbors are currently engaged in on-and-off negotiations mediated by the African Union.

Dreams in the Lich House: Review: Dungeon Command D&D ...

One of the big new games we came home with from Gencon was Dungeon Command. ?My kiddo was obsessed with getting it after seeing one of the sets was Drow-themed (I'm beginning to think he's RA Salvatore's number one fan amongst 10 year olds), and after getting in a handful of games with the system, I can heartily endorse it. ?Most of my reviews are RPG books, but this has enough nexus with D&D, Wizards of the Coast, and gaming, such that I don't mind stretching the bounds.

In Dungeon Command, you play out a miniatures battle on a board made out of dungeon tiles, snapped together like puzzle pieces. ?There are configurations for 2, 3, and 4 player games, although each player needs their own tile set and figures. ?Game play mixes traditional D&D miniatures style combat with a card mechanic reminiscent of Magic: The Gathering. ?The whole is greater than the parts.

As a player, you take on the role of a battlefield leader, and each set gives you a choice of two personae from which to choose. ?The leader cards govern things like creatures in hand, life (morale), mana (leadership ability), and each has other special abilities that modify game play. ?Creatures are represented by D&D minis, with stats on creature cards. ?Special game play effects are managed by "Order Cards' drawn from an Order deck. ?There is a tapping mechanic for attacking or using special abilities granted by the cards.

The game has a compelling mix of physical bits that make it part board game, part card game, and part minis game. ?As I said, the battlefield is built from a mix of tiles provided by each player, giving you some control over the placement of terrain and obstacles. ?"Treasure chest" are seeded on the battlefield, and they can be used by creatures to heal the player's life (morale) in lieu of attacking. ?Creatures have resource costs that limit how many can be in play at a time. ?Cards are another expendable resource that can let creatures attack multiple times, do extra damage, dodge attacks, or perform spell-like effects. ?There's a system of key words that govern which creatures can perform actions with the cards; fighters can't use spell-like cards, for instance.

Various well-known D&D spells and magic items look like they'll be making appearances as cards; Potion of Healing is a minor effect that heals a creature's life; Fireball is a standard attack card that can be cast by an Int-based creature (like the War Mage or Copper Dragon in the Cormyr set); Faerie Fire is an enchantment-type card the Drow can attach to an enemy, making that creature more vulnerable to attacks.

Dungeon Command was released in late July with two initial sets - Sting of Lolth, a Drow-themed set, and Heart of Cormyr, knights, dwarves, and mages. ?I don't pay close attention to WOTC releases these days so this one flew under my radar. ?5th Edition isn't supposed to be out until 2014, after all, so there are still a wide range of outcomes for that particular project. ?In the meantime, here's Dungeon Command, mining the D&D brand and product identity, as well as WOTC's deep in-house expertise on card games, to build a really great game. ?There are upcoming releases planned for September and November; a goblin-themed seat featuring a troll as the big monster, and an undead-themed set featuring a dracolich. ?One of the best parts: ?the game is non-collectible. ?There's no headache around random booster packs of cards or miniatures. ?Every set is a fixed roster of cards and figures.

If you like both D&D minis and card games, this is a can't miss game for you. ?The cards and special abilities add a dramatic amount of strategy and ensure a high replay value. ?Traditional war gamers may not enjoy the randomness and surprise created by the card mechanic; well-planned attacks can be foiled by counter cards that block damage, like a magic user's Shield spell. ?If you were a heavy collector of D&D miniatures from some of the previous incarnations of the line, you probably have all the figure sculpts already; WOTC is using existing molds to fill out the new game. ?Like I said, this is a clever product to fill the gap between now and 5E, since it leverages previous R&D dollars from the minis game, leverages the D&D brand for concepts, and pulls in expertise from the M:TG side of the house. ?It's shrewd business. ?The game offers no insight to me whether 5E will be good or bad; it does demonstrate that the designers at WOTC can still make really fun games. ?This is a bit of a premium product; a single set of Dungeon Command sells for $26-$30 online, or msrp $40 if you're lucky enough to still have a brick-and-mortar game store in your area.

Any questions, fire away in the comments!

Body of Japanese reporter killed in Syria flown home

The body of a veteran Japanese war reporter killed while covering the anti-regime movement in Syria's second city was flown home on Saturday.

Mika Yamamoto apparently came under fire Monday from pro-government troops in Aleppo, which has borne the brunt of the conflict since fighting erupted there last month, according to her long-time colleague Kazutaka Sato.

"I am sorry to say that I cannot find words about the fact that I have her come back this way," an emotional Sato told a news conference at Tokyo's Narita airport.

"I think she has really worked hard. You have really worked hard. That's what I want to tell her now" added Sato, her colleague from the small but respected Japan Press.

Yamamoto, 45, is the fourth foreign journalist to have been killed in Syria since March 2011 and the first to have died in Aleppo. She had covered several armed conflicts, including those in Afghanistan and Iraq with Sato.

Yamamoto was a known face on Japanese television, who came to prominence after surviving a US tank shelling on the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad in 2003 in which two journalists, one from Reuters and one from a Spanish broadcaster, were killed.

Her body was flown from Istanbul aboard a Turkish Airlines plane, accompanied by Sato and two of Yamamoto's sisters.

A dozen of the plane's crew and airport workers offered a silent prayer after the coffin carrying her body was lowered on to the tarmac.

Her body was to be carried to her home in Tokyo and autopsied by police to determine whether she was deliberately targeted, media reports said.

"I want to come close to the truth about how she died," said Sato. "She was tender and had a strong sense of justice. She was straight and hot blooded."

It was a surprise because the claim came well after 2010 ended, and after the new CBA presumably wiped the slate clean between the league and the players, erasing all pending legal issues including any collusion claims that could have been made based on actual or perceived restraints on spending in a year that was supposed to have none.? (Technically, the labor deal imposed a handful of limits in 2010, such as restrictions on the free-agent signings by the teams finishing in the final eight from 2009.)

It was a surprise also because the NFLPA had signed off on cap penalties imposed on the Cowboys and Redskins, penalties which revealed that the two teams were being punished because they didn?t comply with the ?spirit? of a salary cap that didn?t exist.? The union agreed with the penalties because the union desperately needed the NFL likewise to agree to a number-fudging that would allow the NFLPA to avoid the kind of reduction in the salary cap from 2011 to 2012 that would have been awkward, to say the least, as executive director DeMaurice Smith?s re-election approached.

Now that the billable hours have hit the fan, Judge Doty will have to decide whether he?s more persuaded by technicality, or by equity.

As framed by the NFLPA in its final written submission, a copy of which PFT has obtained, the players claim that the NFL didn?t do enough to engineer a release and waiver of claims for past collusion when the new CBA was finalized and all pending litigation was concluded in 2011.? Apart from whether the documents drafted by the parties contained the right magic words to make the claims for collusion in 2010 disappear, the NFLPA has advanced an intriguing argument based on the nature of class actions.? (Try to stay awake on this, please.? If it helps, the link on ?magic words? goes to a Bugs Bunny cartoon.)

The union smartly argues that claims made on behalf of a class of litigants can be extinguished by court order only.? And so the union claims that, by not ensuring that Judge Doty would officially wipe out the collusion claims, the collusion claims weren?t wiped out.

If Judge Doty agrees, it will mean that the league?s lawyers screwed up.

Balanced against that technical application of the rules is fairness and common sense.? Regardless of the specific words or procedures used by the parties, the idea was to hit the reset button on all legal issues between the parties.? The league made concessions and the players made concessions and now the players are trying to avoid one of the concessions they made.? Some judges would decide, quickly, that such an outcome simply isn?t fair.

Compounding the potential for a finding that the NFLPA is pushing for a fundamentally unfair outcome is the fact that the players gladly signed off on cap penalties that necessarily exposed the existence of collusion in 2010 in order to get something the NFLPA needed ? a higher salary cap in 2012.? It?s unseemly, to say the least, for the NFLPA to now try to use that which it gave up to get a high cap number as the basis for seeking billions in collusion damages for allegedly depressed spending in 2010, especially since it should have been obvious to anyone paying attention that something fishy was going on.

Did the NFL engage in collusion in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Should the NFLPA has done something about it in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Is there something that doesn?t feel right about the NFLPA agreeing to the cap penalties that made the collusion crystal clear and then suing for collusion?? Absolutely.

But what we/I/anyone else thinks doesn?t matter.? Judge Doty will provide the first official word on the issue.? And if Doty agrees that the collusion case may proceed, look for the NFL try to appeal that decision immdiately, arguing that if the next level in the federal court system sees it the NFL?s way, there?s no reason to spend the time and money associated with developing the evidence that would prove collusion.

Even though that evidence should be fairly easy to find.

'Cyborg' Tissues: Merging engineered human tissues with bio-compatible nanoscale wires

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue -- how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 30 -- 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments -- both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

4 Responses to the Challenge of Same-Sex Unions by Albert ...

In the world but not of the world? From the very beginning, the church has faced the challenge of responding to external events, trends, ideologies, and controversies. By definition, the church does not get to choose these challenges, but they have been thrust upon Christians by the world. The question always comes down to this: What?now?

That question seems especially urgent in light of the emergence of same-sex unions and marriage in the United States and the world over. How must the church answer this?challenge?

To answer that question, we need to think about the speed of the moral revolution that has pushed this question to the forefront of our culture. In less than a generation, homosexuality has gone from being almost universally condemned to being almost fully normalized in the larger?society.

We are facing a true moral inversion ? a system of moral understandings turned upside down. Where homosexuality was even recently condemned by the society, now it is considered a sin to believe that homosexuality is wrong in any way. A new sexual morality has replaced the old, and those who hold to the old morality are considered morally deficient. The new moral authorities have one central demand for the church: get with the new?program.

This puts the true church, committed to the authority of God?s Word, in a very difficult cultural position. Put simply, we cannot join the larger culture in normalizing homosexuality and restructuring society to match this new morality. Recognizing same-sex unions and legalizing same-sex marriage is central to this?project.

Liberal churches and denominations are joining the project, some more quickly and eagerly than others. The cultural pressure is formidable, and only churches that are truly committed to Scripture will withstand the pressure to accommodate themselves and their message to the new?morality.

What, then, is the true church to?do?

First, we must stand without compromise on the authority of the Bible and the principles of sexual conduct and morality that God has revealed so clearly in His Word. The Bible?s sexual morality is grounded in the creation of humanity in God?s image; we are created as male and female and given the gift of sex within the marriage covenant ? and only within the marriage covenant between one man and one woman for as long they both shall?live.

The easiest way to summarize the Bible?s teaching on sexuality is to begin with God?s blessing of sex only within the marriage covenant between a man and a woman. Then, just remember that sex outside of that covenant relationship, whatever its form or expression, is explicitly forbidden. Christians know that these prohibitions are for our good and that rejecting them is tantamount to a moral rebellion against God Himself. We also know that the Bible forbids all same-sex sexual acts and behaviors. Thus, we know that homosexuality is a sin, that blessing it in any way is also sin, and that normalizing sin cannot lead to human?happiness.

Second, we must realize what is at stake. Marriage is first and foremost a public institution. It has always been so. Throughout history, societies have granted special recognition and privileges to marriage because it is the central organizing institution of human culture. Marriage regulates relationships, sexuality, human reproduction, lineage, kinship, and family structure. But marriage has also performed another crucial function ? it has regulated?morality.

This is why the challenge of samesex unions is so urgent and important. Redefining marriage is never simply about marriage. It leads to the redefinition of reproduction and parenthood, produces a legal revolution with vast consequences, replaces an old social order with something completely new, and forces the adoption of a new morality. This last point is especially important. Marriage teaches morality by its very centrality to the culture. With a new concept of marriage comes a new morality, enforced by incredible social pressure and, eventually, legal?threats.

Third, we must act quickly to teach Christians the truth about marriage and God?s plan for sexuality in all its fullness and beauty. We must develop pastoral approaches that are faithful to Scripture and arm this generation of believers to withstand the cultural pressure and respond in ways that are truly?Christian.

Fourth, and most important, this challenge must drive us to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Christians must be the first to understand this challenge in light of the gospel. After all, we know spiritual rebellion when we see it, for we ourselves were rebels before God?s grace conquered us. We know what moral confusion means because without the light of God?s Word, we are just as?confused.

There is no rescue from the self-deception of sin except for the salvation that is ours in Jesus Christ. While doing everything else required of us in this challenge, the faithful church must center its energies on the one thing that we know we must do above all else ? preach, teach, and live the gospel of Jesus?Christ.

Bartolo Colon suspended 50 games for positive test

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? In the 2? hours it took the Oakland Athletics to wrap up a series win against the Twins, Bartolo Colon's belongings were removed from his locker and his nameplate taken down.

His replacement arrived from Triple-A, too.

Colon received a 50-game suspension Wednesday for testing positive for testosterone, and the A's disconnected themselves from the former Cy Young Award winner in a hurry. He left his teammates stunned and frustrated, some angry that a guy they thought they knew would take such a risk trying to gain an edge at age 39.

The A's now know what the Giants went through across San Francisco Bay.

What a devastating week it has been for the Bay Area's two contending baseball teams. First, it was All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera of the Giants suspended 50 games for testosterone last Wednesday, then Colon exactly a week later for the same banned substance.

"I think the league is doing the best they can with it, and therefore the policy and program is catching people," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "I don't know how much more you can do than that."

Major League Baseball made the announcement of Colon's penalty a week after suspending Cabrera.

"I apologize to the fans, to my teammates and to the Oakland A's," Colon said in a statement released by the players' association. "I accept responsibility for my actions and I will serve my suspension as required by the joint drug program."

He will miss the final 40 games of the regular season and the first 10 games of the postseason if Oakland advances that far. Any remainder of the suspension would be served in a future season, if Colon signs another major league contract.

"It's a shock," Oakland reliever Grant Balfour said. "He's a guy that we're definitely relying on right now. I guess you could say it's bad timing any time, but especially now."

Oakland, which hasn't made the playoffs since 2006, was preparing for an afternoon series finale against Minnesota when players got the news from clubhouse televisions. A closed-door team meeting was called.

"The Oakland Athletics are disappointed to learn of today's suspension," the A's said in a statement.

Starter Brandon McCarthy took that a little further.

"You can say someone's a good teammate, but it has to extend in all facets," McCarthy said after a 5-1 win. "Off the field, on the field and how you are in the clubhouse, no matter how you look at it, we've now lost a really important part of our team to his actions."

General manager Billy Beane received word from MLB earlier Wednesday and began searching for a starter to take Colon's turn in the rotation Thursday at Tampa Bay. Tyson Ross was called up from Triple-A Sacramento and moved into Colon's clubhouse spot.

"It shocked all of us just the fact someone got caught for that," Ross said.

Beane addressed the A's in the clubhouse before the team took the field for pregame warm-ups.

"Listen, it's disappointing. From a baseball standpoint, we're scrambling," Beane said. "We're all disappointed, not just for the Giants and the A's, but for baseball."

Colon is 10-9 with a 3.43 ERA in 24 starts this season, his first with the A's, and has a 171-122 record in 15 big league seasons. A two-time All-Star, the burly right-hander won the 2005 AL Cy Young Award after going 21-8 for the Los Angeles Angels.

Colon will lose the remaining $469,945 of his $2 million base salary this year. He also has earned $750,000 in performance bonuses based on starts and $150,000 based on innings, which are not affected. Thursday's start would have earned him another $250,000, and the suspension will cost him the chance to make $850,000 in additional bonuses based on innings.

"It is what it is. We certainly don't support the actions, but you have to move forward," Melvin said. "You go through things over the course of the season. This is just one of them. ... You have to have a short memory."

Five players have been suspended this year under the big league drug program. San Francisco reliever Guillermo Mota was penalized 100 games in May following his second positive test and is eligible to return Aug. 28. Philadelphia infielder Freddy Galvis and free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd were suspended 50 games each in June.

In addition, a 50-game suspension of NL MVP Ryan Braun was overturned after his lawyers argued his urine sample wasn't handled as the rules in the drug program specified at the time.

"Win at all costs in sport at every level," US Anti-Doping Agency CEO Travis Tygart wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "Athletes and their entourages will do whatever it takes if they think they have a chance to get away with it."

The five positive tests are the most in the major league program since there were eight in 2007.

Beane took a chance on suspended slugger Manny Ramirez earlier this year. Ramirez signed with Oakland while completing his suspension for a positive test but was released in June per his request while struggling in the minors.

"Baseball and the union have both been pretty aggressive in their approach," Beane said.

Colon did not file a grievance a person familiar with the suspension said, speaking on condition of anonymity because that detail wasn't announced. Also, the person said, MLB hasn't found any links between Cabrera and Colon at this point.

World Anti-Doping Agency President John Fahey said Wednesday that he wasn't surprised baseball officials discovered Cabrera associate Juan Nunez purchased a website and attempted to create evidence to support a claim that the outfielder inadvertently took the substance that caused the positive test.

"The fact that a well-known and highly paid athlete has attempted to avoid or reduce sanctioning for an anti-doping violation is not a surprise to WADA," Fahey said. "What concerns WADA is the alleged elaborate scheme that Cabrera and his advisers concocted, one that involved a fake website, an email trail of fictitious orders and a nonexistent supplement product, in an effort to prove he inadvertently ingested the banned substance synthetic testosterone."

Colon had been thankful to get a second chance with the A's. His 10 wins are the most since his Cy Young season.

"Well, through all the changes that have been made, and all the tests, it just doesn't make sense, let's put it that way," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said of two suspensions in an eight-day span. "We're hoping we're past all that."

Colon has credited a stem-cell procedure he had two years ago for saving his career. He had fat and bone marrow stem cells collected and injected into his troublesome right elbow and shoulder in an unproven technique. Colon had no idea how it would turn out, but he responded and spent 2011 with the Yankees.

Joseph R. Purita, an orthopedic surgeon in Florida, told The New York Times last year that he flew to Colon's native Dominican Republic and helped a team of doctors there with the treatment on Colon. He said he has used human growth hormone in the procedure before, but not in this case with the pitcher.

HGH is banned by Major League Baseball.

The Bay Area already had been shocked by Cabrera's suspension.

"Two guys ? that's why they've got the policy, I guess," Balfour said. "The guy may be innocent. You just hope there's some mistake there."

The A's did welcome back starting left-hander Brett Anderson in Tuesday night's win over the Twins following a 14-month absence because of elbow ligament replacement surgery. Beane and Melvin feel especially fortunate to have him now.

Drug-testing labs check urine for its ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, which usually is 1:1 in adult males. A 4:1 ratio is considered a positive test, but baseball officials said this week that even if there is a lower ratio, the lab conducts an isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) test. The IRMS test determines whether the testosterone is exogenous, meaning it came from outside the body.

There have been 76 suspensions this year under the minor league drug program.

Delaware Congressional Delegation Urges Support for University of Delaware Offshore Wind Project

GEORGETOWN, Del. ?U.S. Sens. Tom Carper, Chris Coons and Congressman John Carney (all D-Del.) wrote to U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu Tuesday evening urging him to review and support a joint proposal by the University of Delaware (UD) and National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) to establish an offshore wind test site off of the Delaware coast. The proposal is in response to the Department of Energy's request for proposals for advanced technology demonstration projects.

The letter highlights the many benefits of supporting the University of Delaware wind project, including Delaware's unique geographical position at the center of the Mid-Atlantic region, where the offshore wind industry believes has the greatest near-term potential for offshore wind development; the long-term investments already made by UD in offshore wind research; and the ability for this project to complement other federal investments in drivetrain and large blade testing facilities in other regions on the Atlantic coast. The project is also supported by Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Siemens, Gamesa, Vestas, the Port of Wilmington and Delmarva Power.

"As a result of its design, we expect the UD/NREL offshore wind test site will advance the knowledge base of not only innovative offshore wind technology, but also serve to lower non-market barriers (such as social and environmental barriers) that have proven substantial for the offshore wind industry," the Delegation wrote. "For example, the project has a unique advantage of facilitating the testing of not only of wind turbines, but also of other key components such as foundations and transmission lines to shore."

A copy of the letter follows:

August 21, 2012

The Honorable Steven Chu
Secretary
U.S. Department of Energy
1000 Independence Ave., SW
Washington, DC 20585

Dear Secretary Chu:

We write in support of a joint University of Delaware (UD) and National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) proposal to the Department of Energy's request for proposals titled "US Offshore Wind: Advanced Technology Demonstration Projects." The project application submitted would establish an offshore wind test site off of the Delaware coast that will provide crucial research for the offshore wind industry.

As a result of its design, we expect the UD/NREL offshore wind test site will advance the knowledge base of not only innovative offshore wind technology, but also serve to lower non-market barriers (such as social and environmental barriers) that have proven substantial for the offshore wind industry. For example, the project has a unique advantage of facilitating the testing of not only of wind turbines, but also of other key components such as foundations and transmission lines to shore. The project also will enable the testing of wind power technologies that, while high risk, carry high potential rewards that might otherwise be left on drawing tables.

Here are some additional benefits and comparative advantages of the UD/NREL offshore wind test site:

  • Favors no-one technology and provides performance data into the public domain;
  • Provides a large return on the taxpayers' investment over five years with targets for self-sufficiency by 2017;
  • Leads to national and regional advances in the knowledge base of this nascent industry for the benefit of broad stakeholder groups, including, citizens of Delaware, Mid-Atlantic and other US coastal communities, regulators, and private industry;
  • Builds off of the knowledge accumulated through years of federally funded research projects at UD and its many partners;
  • Reduces costs of offshore wind energy as it incubates proven and future technologies; and
  • Provides economic development and job creation as it supports supply chain and advances manufacturing concepts.

The proposed project complements substantial federal investments in a drivetrain test facility in South Carolina and a large blade test facility in Massachusetts. It also complements the long-term investments already made by UD in the offshore wind research field, resulting in numerous peer review publications being used by the industry, federal, state and local governments. Finally, the project is strategically located, central to the Department of Interior's designated offshore wind power development areas, and more generally in the center of the Mid-Atlantic, where it is believed the industry has its greatest near-term potential.

We are joined by several stakeholders in support of this project including the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Delaware's Governor Jack Markell, Siemens, Gamesa, Vestas, the Port of Wilmington and Delmarva Power

This is a project on which we all have been working for a number of years, and we appreciate your consideration of this application.

Sincerely,

Thomas R. Carper

Christopher A. Coons

John C. Carney

Oil Companies May Have Been Helping Combat Climate Change (A Little)

Here?s some good news about climate change: emissions of greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide have slowed and, in some cases, begun to decline. That means fewer molecules drifting in the atmosphere and blocking the escape of heat radiated by an Earth warmed by sunlight. The bad news is no one knows why.

Now a new study suggests that declines in ethane a simple hydrocarbon molecule and component of the fossil fuel known as natural gas can be attributed to companies stopping the practice of simply releasing the gas that comes up with every barrel of oil. Atmospheric measurements stretching from 1984 to 2010 suggest that ethane emission rates have fallen by a full 21 percent. The study is published in Nature on August 23. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group).

That?s important in its own right but also because of what it suggests about the second most abundant greenhouse gas methane, another simple hydrocarbon and the most abundant molecule in natural gas. Over the span of a century, a methane molecule traps 25 times the amount of heat compared to the most abundant greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

So how much methane human activities put into the atmosphere has a big impact on how much global warming we end up creating this century (and beyond) and represents a shortcut to restraining climate change, buying time to decrease CO2 emissions.

The 60 to 80 two-liter canisters bearing air samples collected from all around the Pacific Ocean since 1984 suggest that the ethane decline is a result of a decline in so-called fugitive emissions from fossil fuel production. As the name implies, fugitive emissions are molecules of natural gas that got away (usually on purpose). Given the value of natural gas as a fuel, however, the practice of releasing natural gas molecules has declined since the 1970s. As a result, oil companies while funding efforts to question the reality of climate change may have been inadvertently helping keep global warming from getting even worse.

There are other sources of ethane as well, such as wild (and human-set) fires or the burning of biofuels. But ethane emissions from those sources have actually increased, meaning the overall decline has to be attributed to some other source. The remaining possibility ending the practice of simply releasing ethane when producing oil is the most likely explanation, the new research argues.

Methane and ethane emissions have been strongly correlated over the period of the study, suggesting that what happens to ethane will happen to methane. In fact, the delay in a more significant drop in methane may be a result of that molecule?s longer lifetime in the atmosphere methane lasts roughly a decade whereas ethane breaks down within a few months.

As mentioned, that?s good news. It may also give scientists a way to identify particularly catastrophic climate change scenarios before they set in, like a release of the trillions of molecules of methane trapped in Arctic permafrost or ice cages on the seafloor. If methane levels suddenly rose without a corresponding rise in ethane that might signal that such a geologic burp was happening.

Unfortunately, the rate of the ethane (and possibly methane) decline has slowed over the last decade, according to the record. And it may slow yet further if fugitive emissions from natural gas wells like those currently being fracked in the U.S. or pipelines grow. There?s also an opportunity to stop the escape of methane from coal mines in China, oil wells in Africa and the Middle East, and pipelines in Russia if we want to slow global warming. To combat climate change, the decline in atmospheric levels of ethane cannot prove temporary.
