Bioelectric signals can be used to detect early cancer

Feb. 1, 2013 ? Biologists at Tufts University School of Arts and Sciences have discovered a bioelectric signal that can identify cells that are likely to develop into tumors. The researchers also found that they could lower the incidence of cancerous cells by manipulating the electrical charge across cells' membranes.

"The news here is that we've established a bioelectric basis for the early detection of cancer," says Brook Chernet, doctoral student and the first author of a newly published research paper co-authored with Michael Levin, Ph.D., professor of biology and director of the Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology.

Levin notes, "We've shown that electric events tell the cells what to do. The voltage changes are not merely a sign of cancer. They control and direct whether the cancer occurs or not."

Bioelectric signals underlie an important set of control mechanisms that regulate how cells grow and multiply. Chernet and Levin investigated the bioelectric properties of cells that develop into tumors in Xenopus laevis frog embryos.

In previous research, Tufts scientists have shown how manipulating membrane voltage can influence or regulate cellular behavior such as cell proliferation, migration, and shape in vivo, and be used to induce the formation or regenerative repair of whole organs and appendages. In this study, the researchers hypothesized that cancer can occur when bioelectric signaling networks are perturbed and cells stop attending to the patterning cues that orchestrate their normal development.

Tumor Cells Exhibit a Bioelectric Signature

The researchers induced tumor growth in the frog embryos by injecting the samples with mRNAs (messenger RNA) encoding well-recognized human oncogenes Gli1, KrasG12D, and Xrel3. The embryos developed tumor-like growths that are associated with human cancers such as melanoma, leukemia, lung cancer, and rhabdomyosarcoma (a soft tissue cancer that most often affects children).

When the researchers analyzed the tumor cells using a membrane voltage-sensitive dye and fluorescence microscopy, they made an exciting discovery. "The tumor sites had unique depolarized membrane voltage relative to surrounding tissue," says Chernet. "They could be recognized by this distinctive bioelectric signal.

Changing Electrical Properties Lowers Incidence of Tumors

The Tufts biologists were also able to show that changing the bioelectric code to hyperpolarize tumor cells suppressed abnormal cell growth. "We hypothesized that the appearance of oncogene-induced tumors can be inhibited by alteration of membrane voltage," says Levin, "and we were right."

To counteract the tumor-inducing depolarization, they injected the cells with mRNA encoding carefully-chosen ion channels (proteins that control the passage of ions across cell membranes).

Using embryos injected with oncogenes such as Xrel3, the researchers introduced one of two ion channels (the glycine gated chloride channel GlyR-F99A or the potassium channel Kir4.1) known to hyperpolarize membrane voltage gradients in frog embryos. In both cases, the incidence of subsequent tumors was substantially lower than it was with embryos that received the oncogene but no hyperpolarizing channel treatment.

Experiments to determine the cellular mechanism that allows hyperpolarization to inhibit tumor formation showed that transport of butyrate, a known tumor suppressor, was responsible

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (awards AR061988, AR055993) and the G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Charitable Foundation.

Ask the vet's pets: February is National Pet Dental Health Month

Dear Christopher Cat: My cat was diagnosed with periodontal disease and needs to have her teeth cleaned. What exactly is periodontal disease?

Christopher responds:

By age 2, 70 percent of cats have periodontal disease. It is the most commonly diagnosed and most undertreated medical problem we cats face.

Periodontal disease occurs in two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis, the initial stage, is characterized by reddened and sometimes swollen gums. It is reversible through dental prophylaxis (cleaning and polishing), followed by home care.

Without treatment, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, an inflammation of the tooth's supporting structures, including the connective tissue, periodontal ligament, the cementum covering the root and the bone that forms the tooth socket. Periodontitis is irreversible but still responds to treatment.

Periodontal disease begins when oral bacteria adhere to teeth, forming plaque. Daily brushing removes plaque before minerals in the saliva can harden it into calculus, or tartar.

Plaque bacteria secrete toxins that destroy dental structures, leading to recession of the gums with root exposure, pocket formation and bone loss.

Worse, these oral bacteria circulate in the blood to distant organs, causing kidney, liver and heart disease. So treatment of periodontal disease is an essential part of keeping your cat healthy.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month, the ideal time to have your veterinarian address your pet's oral health.

Dear Daisy Dog: Lulu, my 12-year-old Yorkshire terrier, broke one of her lower canine teeth. Does the tooth need to be repaired, or will she be OK without treatment?

Daisy responds: Treatment is probably necessary, or infection may invade the pulp cavity and give Lulu a nasty toothache.

Your veterinarian can examine her and advise you about treatment options. Be prepared for your vet to recommend a root canal and refer you to a veterinary dentist.

The other treatment option is to extract the tooth, which carries some risks.

First, our canine teeth, which look like long fangs, have equally long roots that stabilize the jaw and provide much of the lower jaw's strength, especially in a small-breed dog with a tiny jaw. Removing a lower canine tooth weakens the jaw, predisposing it to fracture either during the extraction or later, when chewing hard food or a toy.

Also, without a lower canine tooth, the tongue hangs out, and most dogs drool.

If Lulu's lower canine tooth does need to be extracted because of severe periodontal disease or a tooth root abscess, many veterinary dentists will graft bone into the jaw to reduce the risk of fracture associated with chewing.

Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy | Sports x Fitness

Sports massage offers significant health and performance benefits to professional and recreational athletes. The particulars of the sports massage technique are specific for your chosen sport. Massage therapists who choose to focus on sports massage have superior knowledge about the movement mechanics of a range of athletic pursuits. As such, she or he will focus on the areas of the body that experience overuse and stress from repetitive and often aggressive movement patterns. Whatever your sport, a sports massage may benefit you on a general fitness, physiological and psychological level.

Sports massage incorporates the physical, psychological and physiological aspects of the athlete to produce balance in the system.

Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy

Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy

The physical effect massage is wearing the athlete?s body is extreme. Lactic acid along with other waste products are expedited faster out of the system. The improved circulation increases oxygen delivery to muscles, through deep tissue work, which significantly decreases time to recover. The break down of scar tissue and improved muscle elasticity is yet another advantage.

Massage therapy provides relief for tense, tight muscles, and boosts the flexibility of joints throughout the body. This relaxation and stretching of muscles and joints has the added benefit of improving circulation in your body. Regular massage therapy can also improve the condition of the skin, producing a reduction of scar tissue and stretchmarks. Because massage also stimulates the activity of endorphins, the body?s natural painkillers, lots of people who receive frequent massages also report a low need for pain medication. Of course, the benefits of massage therapy are cumulative, so regular massages maintain these benefits.

Enhanced Flexibility and Quicker Recovery

One of the main benefits is that it improves the blood circulation helping in eliminating the toxins such as lactic acid, that accumulate in your body during exercising. Once the wastes get eliminated, the muscles of your body are able to absorb the nutrients properly. This can help in enhancing the flexibility of the muscles in addition to fastening their healing process, thus resulting in faster recovery in between exercising and training sessions in addition to reduction in any muscle pain the athlete might be experiencing.

Heals Problematic Areas

If the athlete has some specific trouble areas in the body, which tend to suffer frequent injuries or for painful than others, the sports massage therapist can function specifically on these and assist in repairing them.

Improves Performance

Many athletes are afflicted by over-training syndrome, which is a result of not implementing enough rest in between exercising. Some of the symptoms of this syndrome really are a tendency to injure oneself frequently, problems in sleeping, pain in your body and reduced appetite. With?sports massage therapy, each one of these symptoms can be taken care of. This therapy helps a sports athlete to relax mentally and recover physically, thus, helping him improve his performance immensely.

Relaxes and Calms the Mind

There are lots of psychological benefits as well. If it is undertaken before a tournament, it may energize a sports person making him alert. On a regular basis, if slower techniques of massage therapy are undertaken, they reduce stress and anxiety, mentally calming and relaxing the athlete, at the same time. As everyone is conscious that there is a deep mind-body connection, if the athlete is mentally relaxed, it?ll definitely improve his health and fitness and performance as well.

Sports massage therapy works well for everybody, however there are several conditions in which it should be avoided, for example when a person has fever over 100?F, if he is affected with some underlying conditions like tumors, cancer, melanoma, Hemophilia, spider veins, diabetes, thrombosis, amongst many others, if he is affected with some infectious skin disease, like a fungal infection, herpes and a infection or if there is an open wound, a muscle tear, a burn or perhaps a sprained ligament in the body.

Cape Breton to develop $36m biomass plant in Sydney, Canada

EBR Staff Writer
Published 30 January 2013

Renewable energy developer Cape Breton Explorations has outlined its plans to develop a biomass plant in Sydney, Canada.

The plant is expected to entail an investment of $36m and will produce 50,000MWh of electricity per annum for local consumption.

Proposed to be located at Harbourside Commercial Park, the biomass plant will also produce fuel to power buses and fertilizers as a by-product.

Cape Breton president Luciano Lisi noted that the project was fully funded.

Lockheed Martin will provide the engineering and construction services for the project and has commenced work on the preliminary design of the plant, added Lisi.

Construction on the plant is expected to commence in the middle of 2013 with December 2014 set as the target for commercial operations.

Nova Scotia Deputy Premier Frank Corbett remarked that the province was keen to develop clean energy sources for the community to offer cheaper fuels and reduced emissions.

The biomass plant will be developed under the Community-Feed-in Tariff program and meet 20% of the city's energy requirements.
