Texans roll over Titans

HOUSTON (AP) - The Texans have always been known for their prolific offense under Gary Kubiak. Now, Houston has a defense capable of making just as many plays, and the formula has the team off to its best start ever.

Danieal Manning and Kareem Jackson returned interceptions for touchdowns, and Matt Schaub threw two TD passes in Houston's 38-14 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Arian Foster also had a touchdown run for Houston (4-0). Even though the Texans were outgained 325-297 by the Titans (1-3), they broke open a close game after halftime.

"We really played great defense, the whole second half," Kubiak said. "The defensive play in the second was what got us going, the big play."

Houston's offense ranked among the NFL's top-5 from 2007-11, but the team didn't win its first division title until after Wade Phillips became the defensive coordinator before last season.

The Texans ranked second in total defense coming into Sunday's game, and came out hitting.

Titans quarterback Jake Locker left in the first quarter and didn't return after hurting his left, non-throwing shoulder on a hit by Glover Quin. Locker hurt the same shoulder in the season opener against New England.

Matt Hasselbeck threw two touchdown passes in relief of Locker. Tennessee coach Mike Munchak said Locker was "sore" and would undergo an MRI exam Monday.

Chris Johnson carried 25 times for 141 yards, more than tripling his rushing total through the first three games.

"It was a pretty good game," Johnson said. "We ran the ball. I felt like my offensive line went out there and did a great job from the first snap, just getting up on guys, pushing those guys back, and just giving me somewhere to run."

The Texans led 14-7 at halftime, but their offense bogged down for a while after that. Houston mustered only two first downs in the second quarter, and went three-and-out on the first series of the third quarter.

Leave it to Houston's defense to get the Texans going again.

Hasselbeck threw behind tight end Taylor Thompson, and the ball ricocheted to Manning, who weaved 55 yards for a touchdown. Manning's play not only reignited the restless fans at Reliant Stadium, it also seemed to wake up the offense.

"It's a nice luxury to have, when you see them make those turnovers," Schaub said. "It creates such a lift for us."

The Texans went without a huddle and breezed down the field in just over two minutes. Foster broke a 16-yard run, and Schaub threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to tight end Owen Daniels.

Down 28-7, the Titans were forced to throw more despite Johnson's best game of the season. Johnson came in with only 45 yards rushing on 33 carries through the first three games.

Hasselbeck fumbled when he was hit by Antonio Smith in the fourth quarter, and J.J. Watt recovered at the Tennessee 24. Shayne Graham kicked a 33-yard field goal with 5:38 left.

Tennessee crossed midfield, and Jackson intercepted Hasselbeck and raced untouched to the end zone, high-stepping the last 10 yards.

Hasselbeck threw a short TD pass to Wright in the final minute. He finished 17 of 25 for 193 yards.

"It's frustrating because I feel like we're not that far away," Hasselbeck said. "But we didn't play great and we had turnovers and I was a part of three of them. It's just frustrating because I know we're capable of a lot more."

The Texans led 7-0 when Locker was hurt on the Titans' second series. On third down, Quin blitzed and plowed into Locker for his first career sack. Locker immediately grabbed his left hand and arm as he was down on the turf. He walked to the locker room on his own, and later returned in street clothes, his left arm in a sling.

Houston took over near midfield and converted a fourth-and-1 from the Tennessee 38. Foster scored on a 4-yard run.

Hasselbeck, in his first action since the opener, threw a 25-yard pass to tight end Jared Cook. The Texans smothered Johnson for a 6-yard loss to force another punt for Tennessee.

Johnson later broke a 19-yard run and the Titans' offense showed some life with Hasselbeck taking the snaps. Hasselbeck found fullback Craig Stevens for a 19-yard touchdown with 7:52 left in the first half.

Johnson limped off the field late in the first half, after he was tackled by linebackers Brian Cushing and Connor Barwin. He returned for the Titans' first series of the third quarter.

Notes: Watt has 7 1/2 sacks this season. ... The Texans topped 30 points for the third time in four games. ... Graham reached 1,000 career points. ... Texans RG Antoine Caldwell left in the second quarter with a sprained right ankle. ... Titans LB Patrick Bailey, a special-teams player, injured his left hand and stayed in the game. Munchak said he would be re-evaluated on Monday. ... Johnson earned his 29th career 100-yard game.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Today - in Danville Patch

--Bay City News

Antioch police are set to unveil a permanent prescription drug drop-off unit at the police station Saturday on the Drug Enforcement Administration's fifth annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The new prescription medicine disposal unit marks the Antioch Police Department's launch of a permanent drop-off program designed to prevent drug abuse and misuse in the community, police said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Antioch Police Station at 300 L St., and community members are encouraged to attend and drop off any unwanted prescription drugs through 2 p.m.

The department's new disposal program and drop-off event is part of a the White House's Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Plan, according to the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse, or NCAPDA.

Disposing of unused prescription drugs is a key step in preventing misuse of those medicines, particularly by adolescents, said NCAPDA Founder
and CEO April Rovero of San Ramon.

According to Contra Costa Health Services, seven million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Additionally, some 2,500 teens each day use prescription medicine to get high for the first time, usually with drugs prescribed to family or friends, county health officials said.

"I can't stress enough how important it is, especially for parents, to lock up their medications and dispose of those they no longer need as a matter of habit," Rovero said in a statement. "Parents can unwittingly become their child's drug supplier, with devastating consequences."

The NCAPDA gifted Antioch police with the medicine collection unit to be unveiled Saturday through a donation from the creators of the box, Medreturn, according to Rovero.

Community members throughout Contra Costa County will have the
chance to dispose of their prescription drugs at several participating police
stations Saturday. A full list of those drop-off locations is available here.

I Got Fired From Facebook - Business Insider

A former Facebook product manager named Noah Kagan has written a brutally honest article about how and why he got fired from Facebook in 2006 and what he learned from it.

The experience must be particularly painful, given that it eventually cost Kagan a $100 million fortune.

So the fact that Kagan has not only learned from it and is now willing to share these lessons with others is a major tribute to him.

Kagan joined Facebook in 2005, about a year after Mark Zuckerberg started the company in his Harvard dorm room. Eight months later, when Facebook had grown from a tiny startup with ~30 people to a global phenomenon with more than 150 employees, Kagan got canned.

With the benefit of hindsight, he now understands why.

In short, as Facebook grew, it needed people with different skills, and Kagan's skills and attitude didn't grow with the company.

This is something that anyone who has worked at a rapidly growing startup can relate to. And Kagan's experience is one that has been shared by thousands of executives over the years, including many at Facebook.

The biggest lessons Kagan learned, he said, were these:

  • During his time at Facebook, he was selfish--it was all about him: "I wanted attention, I put myself before Facebook. I hosted events at the office, published things on this blog to get attention and used the brand more than I added to it. Lesson learned: The BEST way to get famous is make amazing stuff. That?s it. Not blogging, networking, etc."
  • The best way to ensure that you'll never get canned is to keep finding ways to make your company more valuable. "Go see if your weaknesses are hindering you at your job. Ie. I wasn?t great at planning or product management at this time. Fix them or move to other position. Also, constantly ask yourself how can I make the company more valuable. You do that and you will never get fired*. *unless you do something really stupid or the company goes out of business."??

Kagan is now the Chief Sumo at AppSumo.? The intro to his post is below.? You can read the rest on his blog, OkDork:

Can I be real with you? Real real?

I?m TIRED of answering this question so I?d rather write it out and just point people to this post.

Let me start in reverse.

I can tell you every detail of the day I got fired aka ?let go? aka ?down-sized? aka ?[__]-canned.?

I thought I was going to a routine coffee with my boss and randomly saw Matt Cohler sitting at the table inside (surprising)!

I knew something was amiss. Matt broke the news quickly and I was in dead-shock as the words came out of his mouth. They walked me back to the office and removed my laptop and my cell phone.

Then I proceeded to the Verizon store to use their phone, called my gf (at the time) and drove to the house I shared with 6 other FB guys.

Packed up all my stuff in my CRX, smoked a 1/2 pack of cigarettes on the balcony and drove to my friend Johnny?s place. It took me a bit to let my mom know and I slept on Johnny?s couch for a few days, thanks J!

Later that night we had a bbq at this place and everyone was asking me how the job was going?.#awkward

I kept drinking that night to pass out and pray this was all a bad dream.

At that time, here?s the order of what was important in my life:

1- Facebook
2- Myself
3- Food / Shelter
4- My gf
5- Family
6- Friends

To spell it out. Facebook was my entire life.

My social circle, my validation, my identity and everything was tied to this company.

How could have ended up like this?

WTF! I just got a promotion and a raise 2 months before!

This was my first time being fired and it took me 1 year to get over the depression...

Can Mobile Phone Use Lead to Brain Tumors? | Gutierrez Chiropractic

Can Mobile Phone Use Lead to Brain Tumors?

There are currently close to 6 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide, and increased usage of cell phones has understandably led to a greater level of interest in how safe they are. The main concern for our health is that mobile phones emit and receive electromagnetic radiation as a result of their need to communicate with relay towers, and some of this radiation is absorbed by the head when the phone is held up to the ear. Whether or not the radiation (both the amount and the frequency) that a typical mobile phone user is likely to receive is potentially damaging to their health has been the subject of debate for some time.

Anecdotal evidence that high mobile phone use can potentially lead to brain tumors is not hard to find. Newspapers and other media sources are only too ready to run such stories. However, given that there are so many people using mobile communication so regularly, the chances are that someone is going to have a brain tumor at some point, whether or not there is any link with the amount of time they spend on their phone. The obvious question is whether or not there is good reason to be concerned over how and how much you use your phone.

The most recent assessment of the scientific evidence of mobile phone safety was carried out by the European Commission Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR). They concluded that mobile phone usage was unlikely to increase the risk of developing brain tumors.

The most recent results from a long-term study by researchers from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society in Denmark also failed to find any link between mobile phone usage and the development of brain tumors or any other cancers of the nervous system. This study was particularly significant in that it used most of the Danish population to determine if there was any difference in the incidence of brain cancers between mobile phone users and non-mobile phone users. Unsurprisingly, this work has been quoted frequently, especially by cell phone companies, as evidence that their products have now been given a completely clean bill of health.

In contrast to the previous results, the conclusion of a 2010 paper published in the International Journal of Epidemiology on the subject suggested that while no overall link was found between two kinds of brain tumor and mobile phone usage, the data did point to a possible increase in the development of glioma-type tumors in the most intensive users. The authors also pointed out that since the new generations of smart phones are being used for even greater periods of time, especially by younger people, further and ongoing studies in this area are definitely merited.

In 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified mobile phone radiation as ?potentially carcinogenic to humans.? Following from this, many countries have adopted a precautionary approach and suggested moderation in cell phone usage. Using a hands-free kit to avoid holding a phone next to your head has also been advised. While the available evidence suggests that low and normal usage of a mobile phone does not increase your risk of developing a brain tumor, it is probably wise to reduce your exposure to electromagnetic radiation as much as you can, and certainly to avoid spending long periods of the day with a phone next to your ear.

Turkey's Erdogan signals talks with Kurdish militants possible

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan signaled that new talks with Kurdish militants might be possible with his government facing an upsurge in separatist violence in the country's southeast.

The conflict has cost Turkey dearly since the militants took up arms in 1984, both in human and economic terms, and as the death toll climbs there is growing public pressure on Erdogan to bring an end to the bloodshed.

Turkish intelligence officials have had contact with senior figures from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the past few years to try to end a conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives, but discussions have broken down.

"Regarding Imrali, there could be more talks," Erdogan said in a televised interview with broadcaster Kanal 7 late on Wednesday, referring to the island south of Istanbul where PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan is serving a life sentence.

"There is a military dimension to this, a security dimension which is separate and will continue. But beside this there is a diplomatic, socio-economic and psychological dimension."

Erdogan spoke after Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party called for the resumption of talks between the state and the PKK to prevent a further escalation of violence.

Clashes in the past several months between Turkey's armed forces and militants from the PKK - considered a terrorist organization by Ankara, the United States and European Union - have been among the heaviest since the conflict began.

Turkish soldiers backed by helicopters killed seven PKK fighters on Thursday during a clash in Cukurca near the mountainous Iraqi border, security sources said. One soldier was killed and two wounded in the fighting.

Ankara has linked the surge in violence to the unrest in neighboring Syria. Erdogan has accused President Bashar al-Assad of arming the PKK militants, and raised the possibility of military intervention in Syria if the PKK were to launch attacks from Syrian soil.

MILITARY TARGETS PKK LEADERS

The head of Turkey's armed forces said in a newspaper interview on Wednesday that the military also had the capability to launch a sustained operation against the PKK in northern Iraq.

Erdogan gave the interview a few days before his AK Party's congress, where he is expected to set out the party's future as it goes through its biggest overhaul since coming to power a decade ago.

Since elections in June 2011, the conflict with the PKK has killed more than 700 people, according to the International Crisis Group, the highest toll in a 15-month period since Ocalan was jailed in 1999.

Turkish special forces captured Ocalan in Kenya that year after Assad's father, then-President Hafez al-Assad, cast him out of Syria amid concern that Turkey would launch military action over the militant leader's presence in Damascus.

Since his conviction, Ocalan has been jailed on the small island of Imrali, located in the Marmara Sea south of Istanbul.

Is Your Startup Ready For A PR Blitz? The 7-Step ... - Fast Company

Timing a launch is one of the single most critical business decisions to be made, but many entrepreneurs get it wrong. The term "launch" holds different meanings to each entrepreneur. Some immediately think of a media blitz as the pillar of a launch, but I've seen many startups launch publicly much too early because they want their idea covered in every major news and trade outlet right away.

That comes secondary to developing a sustainable product or business model. It may seem counterintuitive, but it's best to avoid media blitz until you have fully fleshed out your idea.

Here are seven signs you're actually ready to launch publicly:

You must be your startup's biggest cheerleader, but don't fall into the excitement trap and forget the actual audience--and how your product makes life easier for them. Your focus shouldn't be on building a "cool tool," but rather a product that someone needs because it fills a void or solves a problem for them.

It's always risky to launch a product that is still in idea phase. The chances of gaining traction are not very high--and traction is especially important to investors. A good PR firm can initially work with an idea phase product to make it sound interesting and build an early user base, but they can't give you all of the users or feedback that's necessary for fine-tuning your product. Beta test instead. This provides valuable information on how to improve your product and gives you an idea of the public's reaction, both of which are crucial factors that contribute to a successful launch.

Surprisingly enough, some startups don't do their homework. I've seen firsthand three almost-identical companies launch within one month of each other, and it didn't end up well. It's imperative you know what else is out there so you can understand how you measure up to the competition.

What makes you different? How do you ensure that you're always one step ahead of what competitors are doing? And make sure not to miss the key opportunities that help you stand out from the crowd.

Hiring a PR firm to aid in your launch isn't about handing over the reins. It's only natural that a busy startup CEO doesn't necessarily have the time or energy to worry about the tactical details of your public relations plan, so it's important to delegate marketing/PR initiatives to a designated contact who will act as the bridge between your startup and the PR firm.
This person should drive your overall market strategy and have an understanding of where the brand will stand in the future. He or she will help develop the story that you'll tell to the public over time, which leads into the next key sign that you're ready to launch publicly.

If you don't have a story, develop one. Journalists easily recognize weaknesses in the way you position your product and if they're doing their due diligence they will let everyone know what those weaknesses are. You must understand why your product is better than anyone else's and be ready to communicate that effectively.

Part of this process is poking holes to figure out who your users are and why your product is valuable to them. Cut out the fluff, especially in your elevator pitch. Howard Tullman said it best in his Built in Chicago blog: "What you can't basically say in ten minutes about your business or your idea really isn't worth saying."

PR comes into play once you've developed a compelling message that is easily understandable and resonates with consumers. At the end of the day, people want to know the "so what?" You'd be surprised how many times I've seen a startup CEO so close to their product or service they even they couldn't answer that basic question. Think of the most successful startups: I bet they were simple, solved a problem, catered to a key audience, and had long-term benefits.

Launching publicly isn't just about the now but the vision for where you're headed. You must create a roadmap not only for your initial product launch, but also a more advanced map for your long-term goals. You may not end up following the roadmap in its entirety, but having a visible plan of attack is the best way to keep yourself on track.

A shiny logo of a top-tier media outlet on your website is pretty, but that's not a solid metric for your launch. Consider the "why" and the overarching strategy that fits into your larger marketing mix. This is your chance to:

  • Tell a story
  • Shape your positioning
  • Build a foundation of awareness that will accumulate over time
  • Establish your credibility
  • Differentiate yourself
Focusing on vanity metrics--such as the sheer number of media placements you received this month--will only set you up for disappointment because it's not a strategic way of thinking about what delivers the best ROI.

Many startup CEOs will ask, "Why didn't Fast Company cover me again when they did just last month?" It's often more effective to respond back with the question, "What have you done that warrants their coverage again?" Media mentions aren't the only ROI for your business. We've done SEO analysis and found that some of the "small" placements actually provide the best search value. Once you understand this, you're one step closer to a successful public launch.

Your startup is your baby, and maybe you're even a little bit of a control freak because of that. That's okay, but once you launch to the public, you open yourself up for scrutiny. Ideally, you've established strong messaging and a solid product to avoid or fight the criticism, but psychologically, you need to put trust in the people around you that are handling your PR and marketing efforts.

Once your product is out there, it's out there. Then, the rollercoaster ride begins. This is why it's crucial to really be prepared, but also know when to pull the trigger. Don't let the fear of letting go of control stop you from stepping back once all of the puzzle pieces to your startup are in place.

It's important to keep in mind the "snowball effect of public relations." PR done right should build up over time and align with the growth of the startup. A big splash at first is great, but it's not the be-all end-all. Think about an overall strategy that makes sense and will provide the best ROI.

The best advice is to take a step back and evaluate the situation as objectively as you can. It's better to launch the right way than have to backtrack.

Occupy Wall Street protester can't keep tweets from prosecutors

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An Occupy Wall Street protester has lost his latest bid to prevent the Manhattan district attorney's office from using his tweets against him, clearing the way for the judge overseeing the case to unseal the tweets and give them to prosecutors.

In a case that has drawn the attention of electronic privacy advocates, a New York judge denied a request from the protester, Malcolm Harris, to put the tweets on ice while his appeal is pending.

Harris, 23, was arrested along with hundreds of others during a mass march across the Brooklyn Bridge in October 2011 for obstructing vehicular traffic.

Prosecutors subpoenaed Twitter for several months of his tweets, which are no longer available online, to combat his argument that police appeared to lead the protest onto the bridge before turning around and arresting them for walking on the roadway.

Electronic privacy advocates worry a precedent could be set that would make it more difficult for social media users to challenge law enforcement's use of their online words against them.

Twitter and Harris have unsuccessfully fought the subpoena, which has been repeatedly upheld as lawful by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino. The San Francisco-based company finally surrendered the tweets earlier this month after Sciarrino threatened it with contempt and a hefty fine.

Sciarrino had agreed to seal the tweets until a state Supreme Court judge ruled on Harris' latest request for a stay of Sciarrino's order upholding the subpoena. The judge, Carol Huff, denied the request this week.

Martin Stolar, Harris' attorney, said he was "disappointed" but would continue to pursue other legal challenges.

Sciarrino is reviewing the tweets and will provide to prosecutors those that appear relevant to the criminal case.

Twitter still has an appeal of Sciarrino's order pending in an intermediate appellate court, scheduled to be heard in November.

Harris also has a separate civil action pending, claiming Sciarrino overstepped his authority; prosecutors have asked a court to dismiss that lawsuit as an improper attempt to circumvent the normal appellate procedure.

Harris' criminal trial is scheduled for December.

The case is People v. Harris, Criminal Court of the City of New York, No. 2011NY080152.

Weird 2012 Quake Signals Tectonic Plate Birth

On the afternoon of April 11, 2012, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded ? and now revealed to be among the weirdest ? struck in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Sumatra. It's a region all too familiar with geological catastrophe.

Eight years earlier, in December 2004, the third largest earthquake on record had ripped through a nearby region of the ocean floor. The magnitude-9.1 earthquake and the monstrous tsunami that soon followed killed more than 227,000 people in 14 countries,

So when a magnitude-8.7 earthquake (some put the magnitude at 8.6) shook the Indonesian island on that Wednesday afternoon earlier this year, many expected the worst. Yet, no monster wave appeared. A wave did come ashore, but it was a miniature tsunami, just 12 inches (31 centimeters) high.

All told, the earthquake did very little damage ? yet only five higher earthquake magnitudes have ever been recorded. So what was the deal? [Video: What Earthquake 'Magnitude' Means?]

New research published today (Sept. 26) in the journal Nature delves into the intimate details of this earthquake, along with the powerful, magnitude-8.2 quake that followed two hours later. The new studies add to an existing body of research that shows this was a remarkable event ? one of the most surprising earthquakes ever recorded ? and one that offers an unlikely snapshot of a geological process millions of years in the making.

Turning a corner

Data captured by a global network of seismometers on April 11 revealed almost immediately that this quake was a strike-slip earthquake ? the sort that races along the San Andreas Fault. Strike-slip earthquakes occur when two sides of a fault jolt horizontally, displacing the ground sideways. Since these earthquakes don't shove the ocean floor upward ? a required move for tsunami generation ? no deadly wave appeared. [April 2012 Sumatra Quake (Infographic)]

Tsunamis are typically the devastating handiwork of quakes known as subduction earthquakes. They're the most powerful earthquakes on the planet, and they occur at plate boundaries, where one tectonic plate is grinding inexorably beneath another. When the bottom plate suddenly lurches deeper, a colossal amount of energy is released, unleashing the sorts of massive earthquakes and calamitous tsunamis that hit the Indian Ocean in 2004 and the coast of Japan in March 2011. [7 Craziest Ways Japan's Earthquake Affected Earth]

It quickly became apparent that the April 11 earthquake was the most powerful strike-slip quake ever recorded. Which was strange.

Not only was the quake of unparalleled power, it hit in the middle of a tectonic plate, not at a plate boundary, like the San Andreas Fault. "So already it has two unusual attributes," said Thorne Lay, a professor of earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an author on one of the papers published today.

Lay and his team set out to construct a blow-by-blow account of how the earthquake progressed, and what they found added to the quake's mystique. This earthquake was able to turn corners.

"It's totally unusual," Lay told OurAmazingPlanet. It turns out that the quake began on one fault, streaking along at more than a mile per second, and, when it reached an intersecting fault, it ruptured that one, too. In all, it ruptured four different faults over the course of 150 seconds, unleashing an amount of energy equivalent to about four magnitude-8.0 earthquakes.

Lay said that, typically, when earthquakes spread to connecting faults, the rupture rips along faults that branch away from the initial fault like the branches of a river. These earthquakes raced along in a grid-like pattern, making 90-degree turns along faults that resemble a lattice.

"Here, they really do seem to go along perpendicular faults, and we haven't seen anything like that with a big earthquake," he said.

However, he said, the weird rupture pattern reflects the weird geological circumstances at play in the neighborhood where the earthquake hit. The April 11 earthquake occurred in a region that is giving birth to the Earth's newest tectonic plate.

The earthquake hit in the middle of the Indo-Australian plate, a plate that is being torn asunder. And in fact, it is this process that helped trigger this astonishingly powerful earthquake. In a way, the area where it hit was primed for a major earthquake ? scientists just had no idea how major such an earthquake could be.

"It's a pre-existing zone of weakness," said Matthias Delescluse, a marine geophysicist at Paris's Ecole Normale Sup?rieure and an author of another Nature paper on the earthquake published today.

The faults that the earthquake ruptured are, essentially, the bones of an ancient volcanic seam?that once snaked across the ocean floor, giving rise to new crust. The system fell silent 45 million years ago, but the fractures it created in the tectonic plate are still there. ?

And this particular tectonic plate is undergoing some major stress, Delescluse told OurAmazingPlanet. "I like to represent it with the sidecar analogy," he said. Think of the Australia region of the plate as a motorbike, and the India region as a sidecar. Both are hurtling northward at a fast clip ? for a tectonic plate at least ? at about 2 inches (5 cm) per year.

"Now imagine the sidecar ? not the motorbike ? runs into a wall," Delescluse said. "The sidecar would compress, and the motor bike, depending on the violence of the shock, would finally detach from the sidecar."

That wall that our India sidecar is hitting is the Eurasian plate. The colossal collision has produced some impressive side effects: the Himalayas, the highest mountains on Earth. Australia is able to continue its progress largely unhindered, because that portion of the plate is diving under another tectonic plate ? a process that produces the sort of massive earthquake that hit in 2004.

The evidence suggests that the Indo-Australian plate began to be ripped apart between 8 million and 10 million years ago. The 2012 earthquake is just one of many that have likely ripped along the same region since this process began.

After millions more years of similar earthquakes, the ruptures will begin to favor a particular path, giving rise to a new plate boundary, and separating today's existing plate into two.

Delescluse said that the singular earthquake measured in 2012 offers a glimpse of this process in unprecedented detail. ?

"This event is really illustrating what happened in the past and will happen in the future," he said.

Because the continental plates are built differently than oceanic plates, which are far more brittle, it's unlikely that such a colossal strike-slip quake could hit on land, Delescluse said.

Rare event?

A third paper published today shows that the April 11 earthquake likely triggered earthquakes around the world for a short time afterward.

Together, the papers offer an unprecedented look at the geological setup for the earthquake, how it unfolded second by second, and its aftermath.

"The fact that within six months we have understood this much ? that is really quite impressive," said Hiroo Kanamori, a professor emeritus at Caltech, and a revered figure among geophysicists. He was not involved in the research.

Kanamori, who has studied large earthquakes for decades, said that vast improvements in both the quality and quantity of instruments, and of methodology, has allowed the science to make unprecedented strides forward.

"If this had happened 40 years ago, it would have taken a few years to even understand what it was," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

And although he said the event certainly was surprising, he noted that it's only surprising from the perspective of a human lifetime ? "not on the geological time scale," he said.

Lay echoed Kanamori's long-term perspective.

"When you're dealing with a process that may be taking millions of years, we're getting a very short window of observation from which to make generalizations about the past," he said. "Astronomers can look farther away, and they can see farther back in time ? we see what we see today," he said. And the Earth may have more geological surprises in store, he said.

In A Social Media Marketing Rut? Get Out Of It With These Good Ideas

If you are using outdated marketing methods, you will be left behind! Social media marketing provides the newest way to promote your products and services, but you have to have knowledge about how to do it to be successful. This article provides some media marketing ideas to help you succeed.

Make sure you add something visual in your blog posts. People won?t enjoy your blog as much if it?s made up totally of blocks of text. Use logos, video elements, music and sharp graphics to make things look better. Don?t go overboard to the point where all you have is visuals, but even out the text and the graphics.

This is a great way to ensure your success in your marketing. Put your emphasis on channels that have the most traffic, like Google Plus, Twitter and Facebook. By directing all resources, you are able to develop a better marketing campaign which can lead to a more successful business.

When people choose to follow your company?s page on Twitter, follow back. Do not make your followers think you think you are cooler than them! People will enjoy the fact that you are willing to pay attention to them. Following using Twitter merely takes seconds, and it assists in giving back to your customers.

When it comes to social media marketing the right way, it?s all about the titles. It doesn?t matter where you?re leaving a post, you should focus on the right type of title. Good titles encourage readers to notice and view your marketing content.

When dealing with social media marketing, make sure you are remaining active. Success relies on your commitment to being social. Membership will fall off quickly as your audience loses interest in old content and sees the lack of participation on your part. Alternatively, social media campaigns consisting of fresh, current content can offer tremendous levels of success.

You should associate your print ads to your social media offerings. If you distribute a printed newsletter or brochure, include the web address of your social media profiles, or scan older flyers or images and save them in an album online. Attract more customers by offering sneak peaks of your upcoming campaigns.

It takes time and patience to construct a social media network. It is unlikely that you can recruit 15,000 fans in 24 hours. It has happened in the past, but usually it is by chance. If your profiles go viral immediately, that is like gold to your business and is very rare. If you exercise patience, your audience will gradually grow to be the size you want.

Try using time-sensitive deals and coupons to generate buzz about your social media pages. The sense of urgency this creates will encourage customers to act sooner rather than later. You will also make it more appealing for people to share what you have to offer.

Make links that tie all your social media sites together. Add links to different sites and your blog where people can click on them to get to you on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. On your profile page on Twitter, make sure to include the link to your Facebook page and blog. When you come up with different types of links in social media, you help to generate a larger customer base.

Technology today can really help to increase your sales and exposure, by utilizing applications such as Facebook Places. Design a place for your business using this technology, and inspire potential buyers to keep their status up to date by offering them a savings opportunity if they reveal their status during the checkout process. You can also use Foursquare to have customers check into your store in exchange for a discount. You may want to do this as well.

Marketing on social media is an fantastic new way to market your business as long as you use the proper techniques to ensure success. If you follow the tips you just read, you will get measurable, positive results and greater

Just when it seemed that NFL coaches, players and fans couldn't get any angrier, along came a fiasco that trumped any of the complaints from the weekend. (AP Photo/Mike Roemer)

Two days after a controversial call cost the Green Bay Packers a win, the NFL and the referees' union are reportedly nearing an end to a lockout that put replacement officials on the field since the start of the season.

According to several reports, the NFL and the union are close to a new deal that would allow the league's regular officials to return to work, possibly as early as this weekend.

ESPN reported Wednesday that "an agreement in principle is at hand," and The New York Times reported that the sides "''were closing in" on a way to end the impasse. ESPN cited unidentified sources from both sides; the Times cited a person briefed on the negotiations.

A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the NFL and its locked-out officials were meeting Wednesday. The sides met for about 14 hours starting Tuesday into early Wednesday. They broke for a few hours before reconvening in an attempt to resolve the dispute and end the firestorm over the use of replacement refs.

The Changing World of Visual Communications at Strictly Business

The ASMP Guide to New Markets will launch next week at ASMP?s Symposium on September 27th where the first 100 people to arrive at the Times Center in New York will get a free copy.? Those who can?t attend live, can watch the livestream via asmp.org/symposium? Tom Kennedy authored the second chapter of the book: Visual Communications in the New Economy.

The digital revolution sparked by the development of the Internet as a publishing platform and vehicle for social communication has profoundly impacted all people in the world.? Those who work in the fields associated with mass communication and media have been particularly affected.

Photographers can reach global markets in seconds with their work and have the opportunity to engage with customers anywhere in the world, doing real-time transactions.? At the same time, those who are seeking to use and consume the work of professional photographers have an amazing explosion of choice.? However, the ability to find and utilize work in a ?frictionless? transactional environment can be hampered by business practices once associated with non-digital marketing, distribution, and billing.

I can recall having conversations as the Internet dawned with colleagues who could never envision a day when slides wouldn?t be shipped and put in packets for delivery by mail or a courier.? Nor could they imagine doing electronic billing and engaging with clients in a world that did not involve print materials being mailed to potential buyers as a primary way of attracting attention.

In my chapter, I have tried to lay out how the Internet changed the world of communications and how it also upended the value chain that drove pricing for professionally produced photography. Scarcity has always driven the pricing model for professional photography.? Prior to the arrival of the Internet, uniqueness of image (both in terms of content and aesthetic qualities) helped determine market value.? Professional photographers could depend on their work being very separated from amateur images, and the relatively small number of outlets utilizing professional photography could help drive up market value.? Today, the digital revolution has lowered the barriers to production and distribution in such a way that individuals can compete with huge publishing empires on nearly equal terms.? At the same time, advances in technology have lowered the barriers separating professional and amateur work.? The world is awash in imagery and that gulf between supply and demand has the potential to reduce pricing of photographs significantly, rendering it a commodity.

Professional photographers must adapt.? The good news is that there is still an enormous demand for professionally produced visual communication, whether in journalism or a more commercial space.? However, I think photographers must now market themselves as ?visual solutions? providers? rather than solely as purveyors of ?images.?? They must position themselves to work collaboratively with visual professionals in teams so that a client can obtain full packages of visual communication designed to solve specific business problems or help cement relationships between a business and its potential customers.?? While still photographs or moving images may be the fundamental building blocks of ?visual solutions,? photographers will need to market themselves differently by becoming part of a ?team? addressing specific communications goals.

The customers seeking services now have enormous choice, too.? Available time to frame problems, seek solutions, and execute tactics in support of overall business strategy is the new scarcity.? Working to market one?s skills fully means taking all possible friction out of working relationships with clients.? Rather than seeing relationships as ?across the table? transactions, photographers need to see their clients as people with needs whom they can help by being seated on the same side of the table.

In writing my chapter, I looked at the writing of many in academia who are studying the digital revolution from perspectives of technological change to cultural adaption.? What was shocking for me was to really come to grips with the speed of transformation, and to see the amount of dislocation being created for those unwilling to change.? I believe it is essential to acknowledge that publishing, media, and perhaps even human communication are being altered with a power not unlike that unleashed by Gutenberg?s perfection of the printing press.? We are still in the opening decades of this period of epochal transformational change.? The full weight and impact on society are probably still ahead.? Adapting requires effort to understand what is happening, and a willingness to engage in collaboration to fully realize the possibilities for success afforded by the new environment.

Tom Kennedy is the managing editor/digital news for the PBS NewsHour, overseeing content creation and distribution on all digital platforms.? He is an internationally-known visual communicator with extensive experience in print and online journalism.? In addition to teaching at universities, he has worked as the managing editor/multimedia at Washingtonpost.com, Newsweek Interactive, director of photography at National Geographic, and deputy graphics editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer.? He has created, directed, and edited projects that have earned Pulitzer Prizes, Emmys, Edward R. Murrow awards, and a Peabody.

That's not what the Batsignal is supposed to look like! | Bad ...

The dark night rises?

[Click to stimulatedemissionate.]

Nope. This way cool picture is actually the Very Large Telescope observatory in Chile, though that really is a laser being shot into the sky. Our atmosphere boils and writhes, distorting the view of the stars. There?s a layer of sodium atoms in the atmosphere far above the ground, and the laser is designed to make them glow. This creates a very bright point-like source of light that the telescope can view, and measure in real time how the atmosphere is messing up the observation. This can then be compensated using very fast computers and adjustable mirrors, and the result is a far sharper image than could be obtained otherwise.

During this 30 minute exposure, the Earth rotated enough to trail the stars, and the laser was moved to stay on target. That?s why the stars are curves, and the normally pencil-thin laser looks like it does. It makes for a pretty slick effect! Shorter exposures are pretty amazing, too, and I have several linked in the Related Posts section below for your amusement.

Suicide bomber kills 2, injures 46 in Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? A suicide car bomber attacked a Catholic church conducting Mass in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing two people and wounding another 46 in a region under assault by a radical Islamist sect, officials said.

An Associated Press journalist heard the explosion after 9 a.m. Sunday in the city of Bauchi, which has seen a number of bombings and shootings blamed on the sect known as Boko Haram. The blast appeared to hit a parking lot alongside the St. John's Catholic Church in the city.

Police and military surrounded the church and did not allow journalists inside the cordon. Later at a nearby hospital, Bauchi deputy police commissioner T. Stevens told journalists told that the bomber had been stopped at the church's gate, where he detonated the explosives packed inside his car.

Doctors cautioned more could die from their injuries.

"The situation has been brought under control," Stevens said. "We have our men minding all areas."

Stevens said no group or individual had claimed responsibility for the attack, though suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram. The sect, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has been waging an increasingly bloody fight against nation's weak central government. More than 680 people have died in drive-by killings and bombings blamed on Boko Haram this year alone, according to an AP count. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country.

The sect has used suicide car bombs against churches in the past, most noticeably a 2011 Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. That attack and assaults elsewhere in the country killed at least 44 people. An unclaimed car bombing on Easter in Kaduna killed at least 38 people on a busy roadway after witnesses say it was turned away from a church.

Attacks against churches by the sect have waned in recent weeks. Nigeria's military claimed it killed the sect's spokesman and a commander Sept. 17 outside the city of Kano, potentially shaking up a sect that has continued attacks despite a tighter military presence in northern cities.

The killing of members of the sect's senior leadership comes as the group recently changed some of its tactics and attacked more than 30 mobile phone towers throughout northern Nigeria, disrupting communications in a nation reliant on cellular phones.

Saturday night, the military conducted door-to-door searches in the northern cities of Damaturu and Potiskum, areas now under a 24-hour curfew that have been hard-hit by the sect.

It doesn't stream to Macs as there is not proper digital rights management software available. Silverlight, which is OS agnostic, could be solution. I've posted above my interview with Microsoft's Steve Sklepowich from NAB in Las Vegas in May. Steve explains the digital rights management in Silverlight. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer http://www.beet.tv/2008/07/netflix-could-u.html
