Breast cancer survivors benefit from practicing mindfulness-based stress reduction

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? Women recently diagnosed with breast cancer have higher survival rates than those diagnosed in previous decades, according to the American Cancer Society. However, survivors continue to face health challenges after their treatments end. Previous research reports as many as 50 percent of breast cancer survivors are depressed. Now, University of Missouri researchers in the Sinclair School of Nursing say a meditation technique can help breast cancer survivors improve their emotional and physical well-being.

Yaowarat Matchim, a former nursing doctoral student; Jane Armer, professor of nursing; and Bob Stewart, professor emeritus of education and adjunct faculty in nursing, found that breast cancer survivors' health improved after they learned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a type of mindfulness training that incorporates meditation, yoga and physical awareness.

"MBSR is another tool to enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors," Armer said. "Patients often are given a variety of options to reduce stress, but they should choose what works for them according to their lifestyles and belief systems."

The MBSR program consists of group sessions throughout a period of eight to ten weeks. During the sessions, participants practice meditation skills, discuss how bodies respond to stress and learn coping techniques. The researchers found that survivors who learned MBSR lowered their blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate. In addition, participants' mood improved, and their level of mindfulness increased after taking the class. Armer says, for best results, participants should continue MBSR after the class ends to maintain the positive effects.

"Mindfulness-based meditation, ideally, should be practiced every day or at least on a routine schedule," Armer said. "MBSR teaches patients new ways of thinking that will give them short- and long-term benefits."

Armer says the non-pharmaceutical approach works best as a complement to other treatment options such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

"Post diagnosis, breast cancer patients often feel like they have no control over their lives," Armer said. "Knowing that they can control something -- such as meditation -- and that it will improve their health, gives them hope that life will be normal again."

The study, "Effects of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on Health Among Breast Cancer Survivors," was published in the Western Journal of Nursing Research.

Eurozone faces tough hurdles early in 2012 (AP)

FRANKFURT, Germany ? After a hugely-turbulent 2011, the 17 countries that use the euro will be quickly confronted in the new year with major hurdles to solving their government debt crisis, just as the eurozone economy is expected to sink back into recession.

With government finances under pressure as growth wanes, the eurozone will find it even more difficult to shore up its shaky banks and keep a lid on the high borrowing costs that threaten Italy and Spain with financial ruin.

As early as the second full week of January, bond auctions in which Italy and Spain need to borrow big chunks of cash will start showing whether the eurozone is finally getting a grip on the two-year-old crisis that has seen three countries bailed out.

If the auctions go well and borrowing costs ease, then hopes may rise that the strategy of getting governments to embark on often-savage austerity measures to reduce deficits, along with massive support for the banking system from the European Central Bank, may be working.

If rates are still high and show that investors remain nervous about lending to governments, then fears will rise of a government debt default that could cripple banks, sink the economy and, in the extreme case, destroy the 17-member currency union.

Key events early in the New Year:

? Italy and Spain will seek to borrow heavily in the first quarter at affordable interest costs, starting the second week in January.

? The slowing eurozone economy may slip into or already be in recession, lowering tax revenue and increasing government budget deficits.

? Bailed-out Greece must agree with creditors on a debt writedown that will cut the value of their holdings by 50 percent in an effort to start putting the bankrupt country back on its feet.

The major players ? eurozone governments, the European Union's executive Commission and the European Central Bank ? must work together to convince financial markets that troubled governments can pay their heavy debts and therefore deserve to borrow at affordable interest costs.

Default fears have driven up bond market interest rates and made it more and more expensive for indebted governments to borrow to pay off maturing bonds. That vicious cycle forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailout loans from the other eurozone governments and the International Monetary Fund.

A key stress point will be whether Italy can continue to raise money in the markets at affordable rates.

In the first quarter, it has to step up its borrowing to pay off euro72 billion ($94 billion) in bond redemptions and interest payments. Spain, which is expected to sell up to euro25 billion ($33 billion) in new debt, starts a heavy period of auctions on Jan. 12, and Italy begins on Jan. 13.

Overall, Italy will have to borrow over euro300 billion ($392 billion) in 2012.

Italy's auctions are "absolutely pivotal," said Jane Foley, an analyst at Rabobank International.

"If Italy manages to auction this debt successfully, then the debt crisis will take a step back from the cliff edge," Foley said. "If it doesn't, it could go over the cliff edge. At the end of the day, whatever the nuances and hours of discussion that have gone on about the sovereign debt crisis, it boils down to whether a sovereign can sell its debt in the open market."

If Italy fails to borrow at affordable rates, the options are few and unattractive. The eurozone's euro500 billion ($653 billion) in bailout funds ? already partly committed to earlier bailouts ? would struggle to cover Italy's financing needs, even if additional help can be found from the IMF. A bigger solution ? commonly guaranteed eurobonds ? faces German resistance and would take time to implement.

The European Central Bank could use its power to buy large amounts of Italian and Spanish bonds with newly created money ? but has so far refused, out of concern that a central bank bailout would remove the incentive for governments to control their spending.

Instead, the bank has focused on pushing credit to banks so they can keep lending to support the economy.

Still, its limited bond purchases have provided essential support to Spain and Italy by helping hold down borrowing costs. And its latest massive infusion of euro489 billion ($639 billion) in cheap, long term loans may help troubled governments borrow, as stronger banks may use some of the money to buy higher-yielding government bonds.

Italy pays an average of about 4.2 percent on its existing stock of euro1.9 trillion in debt, but the crisis has pushed bond yields on the country's benchmark ten-year bonds to over 7 percent.

Italy's new government, led by economist Mario Monti, can probably pay rates that high for a while, analysts think. Italy paid much higher interest rates in the 1990s for several years; rates peaked at 14 percent in 1992 but fell gradually to around 4 percent by 1998 as the country shaped up its finances to join the euro at the beginning of 1999.

But the country is now hit by contagion after eurozone authorities allowed Greece to ask creditors to take less than they were owed. Italy also suffers from lagging growth, held back by burdensome red tape and bureaucracy while Spain has an unemployment rate of 22.8 percent ? 48.9 percent for people under 25 ? after the collapse of its real estate bubble.

Italy and Spain's battle will be even harder if the debt troubles pull the whole eurozone into a recession. Economists at Ernst & Young foresee a mild recession in the first part of the year and only 0.1 percent growth for the year as a whole, with unemployment at 10 percent for several years.

That will increase the strain on governments trying to persuade voters to accept more cutbacks in spending, pensions and government wages while raising taxes.

It's also not clear how long voters in Greece, which will have its fourth straight year of recession next year, will tolerate continuous austerity. Yet the cutbacks are the price of getting the bailout loans that have kept Greece from default.

Meanwhile Greece is striving to get creditors to agree to write down some debt and avoid larger losses in case of a default that is not agreed ahead of time. A euro14.4 billion ($18.8 billion) chunk of debt comes due in March.

Guntram Wolff, deputy director of the Bruegel think tank in Brussels, said that governments may get past the early hurdles ? only to confront a souring mood among voters in the second half of the year over continuing cutbacks and sacrifices. New governments in Spain and Italy, currently enjoying political honeymoons, will be pressed to show progress. Greece has seen repeated protests and strikes.

"There will be a point in the summer when people have seen a lot of action from government and no improvement in their living conditions and they will ask, do we have this euro to live with austerity and high unemployment," he said.

Wolff thinks that the determination of political elites to keep the euro together will win out: "I think it's going to survive."

GOP campaign for Iowa caucus enters final week (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? An Iowa caucus campaign that has cycled through several Republican presidential front-runners entered its final week Monday, as unpredictable as the day conservatives began competing to emerge as Mitt Romney's chief rival.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, released a new television commercial for the state in which he cited a "moral imperative for America to stop spending more money than we take in. It's killing jobs," he said.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry countered with an advertisement that said four of his rivals combined ? none of them Romney ? have served 63 years in Congress, "leaving us with debt, earmarks and bailouts."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has invested more time in Iowa than any other contender, was the only one in the state during the day.

That changes Tuesday, with bus tours planned by Perry, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, all eager to energize their existing supporters and attract new ones.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul arrives Wednesday. Recent polls suggest he is peaking as caucus day approaches, and in some surveys is tied with Romney or even ahead.

The result figures to be a short but intense stretch of campaigning through small towns and even smaller towns, the sort of one-on-one politicking that has largely vanished in the electronic age.

Failing that, it will pay tribute to the types cuisine that prosper in early 21st century America.

The Perry bus will belly up to Doughy Joey's in Waterloo and to the Fainting Goat in Waverly, an establishment whose website says "After 10 p.m., we are the type of place your mothers warned you about." Perry also will visit a vineyard and winery in Carroll.

Bachmann will make an early-winter stop at a Dairy Queen, as well as Pizza Ranch establishments in Harlan, Red Oak and Atlantic, three localities with a combined population of 17,282.

It's not all about the food, though.

Perry has a stop arranged at the Glenn Miller Museum in Clarinda, population 5,301, where the great bandleader was born.

The Texas governor also has a distinction that none of his rivals can boast, a town that shares his name. Thus, Perry will visit Perry.

There were signs of strategic shifts as candidates struggled to stand out in advance of the straw poll next week that inaugurates the round of primaries and caucuses that will pick a nominee to oppose President Barack Obama next fall.

Perry's new ad shows images of Gingrich, Paul, Santorum and Bachmann as it criticizes Congress and renews the governor's call for halving lawmakers' pay and time spent in Washington.

Despite the commercial's implication, Gingrich and Santorum were out of Congress when the multibillion-dollar financial bailouts of 2008 occurred. Paul and Bachmann voted against the legislation.

Still, the approach taken suggests the Texas governor is more concerned with outpacing Paul, Bachmann, Santorum and Gingrich on caucus night that he is in defeating Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor, making his second try for the White House, has a well-funded and well-organized campaign nationally and in Iowa, as well as allies who are spending heavily on television advertisements through an independent organization known as a super PAC.

While others have periodically risen to challenge him, Romney has kept his support from seriously eroding in the polls, consistently remaining near the top.

A victory in Iowa does not necessarily translate into the Republican presidential nomination. Yet history suggests that contenders who finish farthest behind next week will quickly drop out, underscoring the significance of the struggle to emerge as Romney's chief rival.

The most recent presidential hopeful to surge and then falter is Gingrich. The former House speaker's campaign imploded last summer and still shows the after-effects: a shortage of funds to counter attack ads in Iowa, and failure to qualify for the primary in Virginia in March.

After insisting he would run a purely positive campaign, Gingrich let it be known he was about to attack Romney on one of his presumed areas of strength, his economic proposals.

R.C. Hammond, a spokesman for Gingrich, said the candidate would make the case that Romney has advanced "very timid ideas that will do little to get people back to work."

Gingrich favors an end to taxes on investment income and dividends, while Romney wants to end them only for individuals with incomes of $200,000 or less.

Gingrich also has proposed an optional 15 percent flat tax on income. Under the plan, taxpayers could stay in the current system, which has a top tax rate of 35 percent on taxable income above $379,150, or switch to the new flat rate, which would apply to income at all levels.

Romney favors retaining the current graduated income tax system, with lower rates than currently exist.

Gingrich is at least the fourth front-runner to falter since the campaign began in earnest in Iowa earlier this year.

Bachmann, who won a straw poll at the Iowa State Fair last summer, was briefly atop polls in the state. So, too Herman Cain, who subsequently suspended his campaign after a woman claimed they had a long-term extramarital affair.

Santorum has yet to experience the type of sudden surge that others in the race enjoyed, but has doggedly campaigned in all 99 of the state's counties in hopes of rallying social conservatives to his side.

No Push on iPhone 4 (IOS 5.0.1)

Hi,

?

I have an iPhone 4 and an iCloud account, and the Push feature doesn't work.

?

Description

I have an iPhone 4 with IOS 5.0.1 and Push feature doesn't work, here are two examples:

- when I receive an e-mail on my iCloud account, the push feature works with my iPad and my MacBook Pro but not with my iPhone. With the iPhone, the only way to me "notified" of a new e-mail is to open mail and wait for synchronisation...

- when I set to on the "Find my iPhone" feature, the iPhone appears in the "iCloud > Find my Mac" feature, but it is never localized.

?

Test

After reading internet forums, I have tried to restore my iPhone as a "new iPhone" and I was really surprised to discover that the Push feature worked pretty well. Congratulations !!! ... But, after a few minutes I discovered the "new iPhone settings" second effect : no more sms/message history, no more app organization ... For the settings, I can spend a while to put everything in order, but I'm not really ready to loose all my sms.

?

Issue

I'm not speciallised on iPhone, but IT is my job and I guess that I have a kind of "ID" issue and my iPhone is not clearly recorded to Apple servers. Can I pick the "ID" of the new backup to "copy" it in the old one ?

In any case, I would like to not have to choose between "sms/message history" and "push feature".

Thanks for your help and merry Christmas.

?

Jerome

Chinese Restaurant Sign Thanks Jews for Eating There on Christmas

Jewish Christmas Cuisine

Growing up on Long Island there was a Chinese food place on every other corner, with a pizza parlor in between. And not a lot to do on Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day, if you weren't celebrating the holiday. With a large Jewish population on the Island, the Chinese food places got heavy traffic those evenings.

My family celebrated Christmas, though, a tradition Kelly and I keep today. We like good food, too. We?re enjoying a modified version of the non-traditional Christmas Eve/Christmas Day feast here tonight: Chocolate Martinis, followed by take-out Thai.

Enjoy your feast this Christmas Eve!

Lack of snow means business for golf courses

by Justin Corr

Updated today at 10:25 PM

BOISE -- Local ski areas continue to fret over their lack of snow. But while that's made for a slow skiing season so far, it's meant an extended season (and additional revenue) for another popular activity in the area.

Mark Bryant is one of 30-some golfers who played a round at Warm Springs on Wednesday.

"Some of these guys are out here everyday," said Bryant.

He's one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, who is still playing golf all over Southern Idaho, which is quite something, considering it's officially winter in the Northwest.

Bryant says he's been out five times this year, but he knows other golfers who have been on the course pretty much every day in December.

"It's keeping us busy," said Peter Nichenko, Head Golf Pro at Warm Springs. "We've seen our fair share of golfers."

There's one obvious big reason that golf courses in the area are seeing good business, especially when compared to last year. It's the same reason that ski areas are seeing no business, a complete and total lack of snow.

"It's not good for the ski resorts, but people have to do something in the winter," said Nichenko. "So, we're seeing some extended golf."

"We've been golfing all winter long," said Nichenko. "There's no snow on the mountains, so all the guys who are the skiers, are out here continuing to golf. They're a little unhappy with that, but we've been having a wonderful time."

With no snow on the ground, once the morning frost melts, these courses are open for business. And business is pretty good. It's not what you'd see in the middle of summer, but it's good. That's especially true when compared to last year when most courses were closed by snow in November.

Now, course managers are reporting as many as ten times as much business this December than normal. That means a lot more green for businesses that are usually hibernating this time of year.

"It's good. We get a little bit of revenue," said Nichenko. "It keeps us busy. Better than sitting around, twirling our thumbs."

Course managers say they'll need to see snow sticking to the greens to actually close up shop. Right now, they're not seeing it. There's a possibility they just won't close, staying open until spring, the unofficial start of the next season.

Family Gold Mining Poisons Children in Nigeria

Image: USGS

Large numbers of infants and toddlers have died from lead poisoning in Nigerian villages where their parents process gold ore inside their family compounds, according to a report published Tuesday by an international team of researchers.

In two Nigerian communities, 118 children under the age of 5 died in a single year ? 25 percent of the children in that age group. For the first time, the researchers uncovered strong evidence that points to lead as the likely cause for nearly all of those deaths. In addition, all of the surviving children who were tested suffered from lead poisoning, too.

?To our knowledge, this is the first documentation of an outbreak of childhood lead poisoning associated with artisanal gold mining,? the team, directed by lead experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote in the online edition of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. ?Extensive environmental contamination was found in both of the villages and inside individual family compounds.?

Artisanal gold mining is small-scale, subsistence mining that occurs mostly in poor, rural communities. In the Nigerian villages, people use crude, rudimentary processes to extract gold from ore, including grinding and heating the rock. In some cases, flour-grinding machines are used. These activities contaminate the air and soil with large amounts of lead and mercury, both of which cause neurological problems in children.

?

Sparked by a gold rush, artisanal mining occurs throughout northern Nigeria, as well as elsewhere in Africa and in South America, including Peru. From 13 to 20 million men, women and children from over 50 developing countries are involved in artisanal mining, according to an estimate by a World Bank group.

Word first spread of hundreds of children dying in Nigeria?s Zamfara state in early 2010, when the deaths were discovered during meningitis surveillance by the international humanitarian group M?decins Sans Fronti?res and Nigerian public health officials. The United Nations has estimated that 400 children died there last year due to lead poisoning.

Calling the outbreak unprecedented, the scientists warned that ?characterizing the full extent of the outbreak remains an urgent and ongoing matter.?

Lead poisoning is common worldwide, leading to diseases and IQ reductions, but until now, deaths have rarely been reported.

At the emergency request of Nigerian officials, researchers from the CDC and the World Health Organization visited two villages in Zamfara state where higher-than-expected numbers of children died between May, 2009 and May, 2010. They tested the blood of surviving children, took soil samples from family compounds and questioned parents about their dead children?s symptoms.

All the results were extreme. Eighty-one percent of the children who died had suffered seizures, a sign of acute lead poisoning. Of the surviving children who were tested, ?all blood samples indicated lead poisoning,? while 97 percent needed immediate chelation therapy to lower those levels, according to the report. Mercury levels were lower in the children, but still excessive ? four to eight times higher than the average U.S. child. And 85 percent of the soil samples taken from the family compounds exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s health standard for lead. One water well had 90 times more lead than the EPA?s action level for drinking water.

Of the 118 households where children under the age of 5 had died, ore processing occurred inside the family compound in 84 of them. Toddlers are most vulnerable to lead poisoning because they crawl or play on the contaminated ground and they have developing nervous systems.

The outbreak of deaths could have been tied to an increase in the number of grinding machines in the villages in November of 2009, ?contributing to widespread contamination,? the researchers reported.

Texas Rangers win negotiating rights to Yu Darvish (AP)

NEW YORK ? After losing a pair of aces in the last two years, the Texas Rangers are going global to land a new one.

Winner of consecutive AL pennants, Texas also won the Yu Darvish sweepstakes Monday night with a record bid of $51.7 million. Now, the Rangers get 30 days to negotiate a contract with Darvish that would put Japan's best pitcher at the top of their rotation.

"Obviously, it's a very exciting night for our organization, our fans and our community," general manager Jon Daniels said on a conference call.

Major League Baseball announced that the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League accepted the highest bid for Darvish. That sealed offer was submitted under the posting system by the Rangers.

"Our ownership went the extra mile on this one," Daniels said, declining to reveal specifics.

A person familiar with the details said the winning bid by Texas was $51.7 million ? more than the $51.1 million posting fee the Boston Red Sox paid for Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2006. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the figure was not made public.

Yahoo Sports and The New York Times reported the amount first.

Darvish is considered the best pitcher in the Japanese professional leagues and several of baseball's biggest spenders were thought to be interested in him.

If the Rangers can close the deal, the 25-year-old right-hander would join a rotation that already includes five starters: Colby Lewis, Derek Holland, Matt Harrison, Alexi Ogando and former closer Neftali Feliz, moved out of the bullpen when the club signed free-agent reliever Joe Nathan this offseason.

"If we're able to sign him (Darvish), then we'll have a very good problem on our hands," Daniels said.

It's a dynamic endeavor for the Rangers, buoyed by a lucrative television contract and back-to-back AL championships under a new ownership group led by Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan. But the team is still chasing its first World Series title ? and Texas knows all too well that nothing is done until it is done.

Despite a serious effort, the Rangers were unable to re-sign star pitcher Cliff Lee following the 2010 season. They made it back to the World Series anyway and were within one strike of winning it all ? twice ? before the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to take the trophy.

Then the Rangers lost their latest ace, C.J. Wilson, when the left-hander agreed to a $77.5 million, five-year contract with the AL West rival Los Angeles Angels this month.

"Our commitment of our ownership is to put the best team out there. The last couple of years we just haven't been able to close it out," Daniels said.

Bidding for the posting fee closed last Wednesday, and the Ham Fighters had until 5 p.m. EST on Tuesday to accept. The fee will be paid only if a contract agreement is reached with Darvish's agents, Arn Tellem and Don Nomura.

If no deal is finalized, Darvish returns to the Fighters for another season.

Two months ago, the Rangers let a championship slip away. They don't want the same thing to happen with Darvish.

In a statement released before the conference call, the Rangers said they were "pleased and excited" to win the rights to negotiate with Darvish.

"Our organization has scouted Mr. Darvish for the last several years and has been very impressed with his abilities and accomplishments. We believe he would be a great addition to the Texas Rangers pitching staff," the team said. "We look forward to beginning the next step of this process in the very near future."

Darvish, the son of an Iranian father and a Japanese mother, went 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA last season. He had 276 strikeouts to lead the Pacific League.

The Fighters gave him approval to negotiate with a major league club through the posting system. Matsuzaka and Ichiro Suzuki went to the majors under the same system.

Darvish pitched in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was a member of the Japanese national team that won the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

The 6-foot-5 Darvish has superb control and throws seven effective pitches. It's expected he would make a front-line major league starter, though the MLB track record of Japanese aces is shaky.

"Darvish is the No. 1 pitcher in Japan, but we want him to become the ace of the world," Nippon Ham team representative Toshimasa Shimada said this month.

Darvish turned pro in 2005 at 18. His professional career got off to a rocky start when he was caught smoking in a pachinko parlor on an off day during his first spring training, despite not being old enough to legally smoke nor to gamble at the time.

In 2007, Darvish won the Eiji Sawamura Award presented to the top pitcher in Japanese professional baseball after posting a 15-5 record with a 1.82 ERA and a league-leading 210 strikeouts.

The Red Sox signed Matsuzaka in 2006 to a six-year, $52 million contract, taking the total package ? including the posting fee ? to more than $100 million.

(AP) ? Senate officials say negotiators are close to a deal for a two-month extension of Social Security payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed. Both are due to expire at the end of the year.

The same package is also expected to require the Obama administration to make a speedy decision on the fate of a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to Texas that promises thousands of jobs.

If nailed down, the deal would come up for a vote in the Senate as soon as Saturday.

Majority Republican leaders in the House were not involved in the negotiations.

The developments came after the White House backed away from a veto threat that centered on the pipeline.

'Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows' Cheat Sheet

We have everything you need to know about the Guy Ritchie sequel.
By Kara Warner

Robert Downey Jr. in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"

After the spectacular success of "Sherlock Holmes" — $515 million in worldwide ticket sales and a Best Actor Golden Globe win for Robert Downey Jr., both of which were unpredictable accomplishments given the fact that the film arrived in theaters at the same time as James Cameron's "Avatar" — it was no surprise when Warner Bros. announced plans for a sequel.

To celebrate the arrival of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," in theaters Friday (December 16), here's our comprehensive cheat sheet of everything you need to know about the action-packed, Guy Ritchie-directed sequel.

A New World of Possibilities
Amazingly enough, talk of a "Sherlock" sequel began three months prior to the original's release, when Brad Pitt was rumored to be joining the cast as Moriarty and there were rumblings that it would be shot in 3-D. Neither of those things panned out, but we did eventually learn that the sequel would be filmed in Paris and London and that instead of "Sherlock Holmes 2," the film's title would be "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

Fresh Meat
Early on, we learned that Rachel McAdams' return as Irene Adler was trimmed to a "very small part," which made way for the addition of a new female lead, Noomi Rapace, who originated the role of Lisbeth Salander in Sweden's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Ritchie summed up her character thusly: "She's a gypsy princess with balls," he told us when we visited the set. "That's what Noomi brings to the table."

The other new addition was "Mad Men" actor Jared Harris, who won the coveted role of the villainous Professor Moriarty. Harris couldn't give us many details about the role when we caught up with him in early '11, but he did gush about the "great fun" he had on set.

Setting the Shadowy Tone
As we started to inch closer to the film's release, we started to see that the sequel was going to be a bit darker via the first official posters, photos and the first full-length trailer. It's not all dark and stormy, of course, since a lot of the fun of the first film was in the whimsical moments between Downey and Law, and Holmes' various disguises, as revealed in this funny clip featuring more of RDG in drag.

When MTV News caught up with the main players recently, Downey assured us the film is a "superior product" and that everyone had gone to great lengths to make it bigger and better. Perhaps Ritchie summed it up best: "All in all, we tried to basically put this film on 'roids."

Check out everything we've got on "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

Hubble images celestial snow angel in 3D

Lisa Grossman, reporter

This serene-looking cloud of gas and dust, whose symmetrical lobes give it the look of a celestial snow angel, is actually the home of a violent young star rebelling against its parent nebula.

The star-forming region, called S106, lies a few thousand light years away and houses a young star about 15 times the mass of the sun. The star is blowing off hot material at high speeds, which sculpts the surrounding gas clouds into their hourglass shape, heats them to about 10,000 degrees Celsius and ionises them so that they glow. The star will soon settle down and enter the main sequence, considered to be the adult stage of a star's life.

The visualisation presents a 3D view of the region by combining data from Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 and the Subaru Infrared Telescope. The added depth illustrates how astronomical objects that look flat from Earth are actually spread out across light years of space.

If you enjoyed this post, you might like to zoom into a nebula or check out a clip of astronauts repairing Hubble.

US lifts sanctions on Libya

The United States on Friday lifted most of the economic sanctions it had in place against Libya before the fall of former ruler Moammar Gadhafi.

"After careful consultation with the new Libyan government, the United States rolled back most U.S. sanctions on the government of Libya to keep our commitment to the Libyan people,'' the White House said in a statement.

The action unfreezes all government and Central Bank of Libya funds within U.S. jurisdiction, with limited exceptions. Assets in the U.S. of the Gadhafi family and former Gadhafi regime members remain frozen.

The move was announced the same day the U.N. Security Council lifted sanctions on Libya's central bank and a subsidiary, clearing the way for their overseas assets to be unfrozen to ease a cash crisis, a council diplomat said.

The Central Bank of Libya and the Libyan Foreign Bank, an offshore institution wholly owned by the central bank, were taken off the council's sanctions list drawn up earlier this year amid civil war in the Arab state.

Gadhafi killing may be war crime, ICC says

After a rebellion broke out in February against Gadhafi, the Security Council froze Libyan assets abroad, estimated at $150 billion. Most of that sum has remained beyond the reach of the oil-rich country's new rulers.

Gadhafi's 42-year rule collapsed when his forces fled Tripoli in August, and the last of the fighting in Libya ended in October when he was captured and killed by rebels.

Yet by late November only about $18 billion in seized assets had been released by special provisions of the Security Council's Libya sanctions committee, and diplomats said only about $3 billion of that had been made available to Tripoli.

A U.N. resolution in September eased sanctions on Libya, removing them from the national oil company but leaving them largely in place on the central bank and LFB because of legal problems over unfreezing their foreign assets.

Last week, senior figures in Libya's new leadership wrote the committee asking it to delist the two banks, which had been sanctioned along with two Libyan investment authorities.

The move was "essential for the economic stability of Libya; for confidence in the banking sector; for the smooth execution and settlement of both domestic and international banking transactions; and to underpin the social and microeconomic stability of the new Libya," said the letter, obtained by Reuters.

Frustration at the delay in releasing the assets has been growing inside Libya, where the interim government says it urgently needs the cash to pay the wages of public sector workers and to start re-building state institutions.

Reuters contributed to this story.

Motorola Xyboard 8.2 review

The march of the Honeycomb tablets goes on, playing a tune that's starting to get a bit muted thanks to the promise of fresher beats coming from Ice Cream Sandwich. Still, there are plenty of ways for manufacturers to add their own bit of swing to the same 'ol song. Motorola, of course, paved the way for all these slates with the Xoom. It's hard to believe that first Honeycomb tablet was released just 10 months ago, but now we have its successor, the Xyboard, here in its 8.2-inch guise.

At least, that's what it's being called domestically. Elsewhere it's the Xoom 2 (we reviewed the 10.1-inch flavor already), but in America we get a patently unfortunate moniker for a tablet that offers an interesting design at an interesting size with the interesting bonus of LTE. But, all that mobile bandwidth is going to cost you: $430 for the 16GB model or $530 for 32GB if you sign on for a two-year data contract. Does the funky design, convenient size and high-rate connectivity make up for the added cost over something like the class-leading Transformer Prime? Let's find out.

Geminids offer the last chance to catch a meteor shower in 2011 (Yahoo! News)

Full moon continues to be the bane of star-watchers

This hasn't been a great year for meteor-watching: the nearly full moon has made it difficult to see both the?Perseid and?Leonid meteor showers this year. Sadly, the same situation will occur for the Geminid meteor shower, the last of the year's stellar events, which will be somewhat dimmed by the light of the waning full moon.

The Geminids are scheduled to peak tomorrow and Wednesday evening, when it should still be possible to see up to a hundred meteors per hour if the weather's good. This particular shower is usually great for watching and?photographing the meteors, as they tend to be relatively slow and bright.

The Geminid meteor shower is also unusual compared to other meteor showers because it's not caused by the Earth passing through the debris trail of a comet. On the contrary, the debris stream that causes the Geminids is actually from an asteroid called Phaethon 3200. These asteroids tend to be more solid than those from comet tails, which is why they are frequently brighter and easier to see.

To catch the Geminids, dress warmly and keep your eyes to the sky. The meteors will radiate from near the constellation Gemini, though they can appear anywhere in the night sky.
